Coil gets hot won't start

hey guys I have a 70 c10 with a carburated vortec 350 just swaped it in to replace a blown i6 250. Was able to get it started and running for about a month but never moved it. The first time I took it out to the gas station to fill up the tank it died on the way back home and wouldn't turn back on i checked it and the only thing I could find is the ignition coil getting really hot. Was told it was a bad pickup or ignition module on distributor so changed it out but still have same issue.
Any advice is greatly appreciated. TIA

Did you hook up your coil to a straight 12V power source? Sometimes they need a ballast resistor.

Maybe describe what ignition distributor and coil that you have.

I am running a jegs r2r small cap hei distributor with an accel coil. I ran a constant 12 v from fuse block originally but after failed attempts of getting it to run i even tried running it straight from battery at least just to get it started and no luck.. post pictures tomorrow.

Re: Coil gets hot won't start

Everytime I ever had a coil get hot and not start I replaced the coil but it hasn't happened in years. The old coils were oil filled and you could shake it when bad it would rattle, no oil. Some of the new coils are different they don't have oil and I have heard problems with some of them shorting out on the inside.
