NP205 paint color
The 205 out of my ‘70 K10 burb is red. Seems somebody here once said Chrysler red engine paint is a close match, but I can’t find that thread. Anybody know the code? Close enough is fine, this isn’t an obsessive resto.

Re: NP205 paint color
Rustoleum semi-gloss black. Red was never a color for a factory t-case. Some of the rebuilds I do, I paint battle ship grey--even the aluminum t-cases

Only time I've seen them red is on the inside.

I used rustoleum primer with satin clear over the top
Understand I am not building a restored truck |
Re: NP205 paint color
mine is older, NP 200 divorced, but under all the yrs of grime buildup was red paint, i feel that was the way it came, truck was pretty much untouched..i stripped it down and painted it with Seymore castblast, which is a cast iron look color

Re: NP205 paint color
Thanks. Almost looks like that Rustoleum rusty metal primer I put on everything. I also have a ‘72 205, under the grime it’s the same red. Doubt it’s a coincidence

Re: NP205 paint color
I have a late round bolt pattern 205 that has the dark red paint as well... It came out of a 91 Sub behind an NV4500, but I'm sure neither started out in the Sub.

I’m confident neither had been out of the trucks they came from before I pulled them out. |
Re: NP205 paint color
Nice. There aren't a lot of round pattern 205s around.
Assuming the one with the black bellhousing is the black one, GM didn't paint bellhousings other than overspray and not black. That suggests a PO painted the TC. How's that for sketchy pseudo logic with no facts. LoL ;) My guess is that the (GM destined) TCs were painted in some years with red primer that in some cases lasted and in others didn't. The color/paint may have been different in earlier and later years. The Sub I parted to get the 205 from was a 3/4 ton w/ a semifloating 14 bolt. |
Re: NP205 paint color
There is Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer and there is Rustoleum Red Oxide primer. The Rusty Metal Primer is a lot more brown than the Red Oxide. i'm inclined to say it's the Red Oxide. But do your own test. I always liked them Chevy Orange Engine color when not restoring

Re: NP205 paint color
Besides the GM 205s I've had that were red oxide primer I've had two Dodge divorced NP205s that were that color as well. One of them I pulled myself from a 73 W200 that I'm sure nobody had been into before. It's just always been my belief that's how New Process shipped them to assembly plants. I am impressed of the fact that they also primered the inside of the case.

Re: NP205 paint color
black is beautiful....I never had anyone look under my truck and declare
"your transfer case is the wrong color"..... personal choice takes precedence.... |

My long running favorite for a chassis is everything black. The transfer case, transmission (unless automatic), and engine get Chevy Orange. I used to do yellow shocks but they are fine being unseen in black. I spray them before installation with Permatex bedliner |
