My aluminum wheels look like they have hard water spot and oxidation. I watched a video of this being used with 0000 Fine steel wool. It brought the Shine back to the wheel. Anyone ever use this product?

Here is a pic after using the Noxon Metal Polish and Mothers Aluminum polish afterwards. I like what I'm seeing. That was with minimal effort. I'll really get after it this weekend and see how it comes out but I'm very please with the results.

I had a chance to really clean the wheels yesterday and even though it did do away with the hard water spots and oxidation it does give a little bit of a brushed aluminum look to the wheels. My process was to clean the wheel, use 0000 steel wool and Noxon to clean The wheels (did this twice), clean the wheel with windex and wipe dry, polish the wheel with Mother's Aluminum Wheel Polish. Even though it looks a little like brushed aluminum its 10 times better than they were before. The first pic is the front and the second is the rear wheel.

Came out nice. I haven't used that brand. I have used Marvel Mystery oil for both aluminum and chrome. Works really good.

They did come out better and I'm glad it got rid of the hard water spots and oxidation but I'm still wanting that chrome finish look instead of the brushed aluminum look it has left. I stopped at Walmart looking for the Busch brand of polish as I've heard a lot about it but couldn't find any. I had heard good reports about the BlueMagic as well so I bought some to try. BlueMagic did no better than the Mothers Aluminum polish. Still on the hunt for that good chrome finish look.

I bought the Mothers Power Cone to give it a shot. Here are my thoughts about the Mothers Powe Cone and all the Metal polishes I've tried. I have tried Meguiar's Metal polish, Bluemagic metal polish cream, Mothers Mag & Aluminum polish, Turtle Wax polish, and Noxon metal polish I've used enough to know that one is no better than the other. Noxon metal polish was the only one that would remove the hard water spots and the oxidation but I did not try any of the others with the 0000 steel wool. All the others worked about the same and would not bring the shine back to my wheels that I was expecting. As far as the Mothers Power Cone, it did make the job faster and it got in some of the spots my fat fingers would not so I've fairly pleased with it.

The only way to get them to a full polish shine will be to buff them. All the polish you have tried is good to keep the shine, not to fix the surface from the steel wool treatment. You can do it on the truck but pulling the wheel would make it easier. Her is couple of links for what you will need. Ok....I took the wheels off this morning and cleaned the back side and front again with steel wool and Noxon then I used Mothers Power Cone and hit it with blueMagic Metal Polish cream. I think I'm satisfied with the outcome. Before this venture the passengers side wheels looked like someone dumped acid on the wheels. They were spotty and dull looking. Now all 4 wheels shine the same. I am a happy camper.

the steel wool is scratching the aluminum causing it to be dull. regardless of how fine of a grit you use (0000, 000, 00, etc), steel is harder than aluminum. the only way to get a gloss back is as has been mentioned above and that is mechanical buffing to remove the steel wool scratches.

I use Blue Magic or Mothers and a small power cone on the truck and Harley I like the Blue Magic but that freeking cone is the cats ass :metal:

Yeah I have to agree. The cone is the cat's meow. Doesn't seem to make it shine any more it just speeds up the process and gets into those area's where my fingers can't.

My .02.
These are cast wheels and are softer than billet wheels. You will never get a cast wheel to a chrome finish like a billet wheel.
They look good. Mothers is my choice for wheel polish.

Can one of you guys post a picture of this freezing cone, I'm curious about it and where you bought it. I'm working on my 69 grille, but I need to strip it and polish out some scratches, will it work for that also?

To the OP, Simichrome is a polish I've seen do amazing things. That said, I would agree with two factors mentioned above. One is that they are cast and probably a little more porous than wheels cut from a block of aluminum, and two, I think that the steel wool is leaving minute scratches. However, it looks to me like you've gotten great results already. Now that you've got them clean, if you polish them regularly and protect them with something that keeps them from oxidizing, you hopefully will work your way through those tiny scratches. So every time you polish them, they should get just a little bit brighter.

I've tried every polish talked about in this thread through the years. Hands down the BEST polish I've ever used was Eagle One "nano" polish which was discontinued ages ago......I still have a little bit left for special occasions. Next on my list is Wenol in the blue tube for maintaining and red tube for bringing back that lost shine. Wenol also leaves a coating on the aluminum to protect it from oxidation. After that the Mothers AND Blue Magic work great too.
