Is an AAM 10.5" rear end from a 2002 Chevy too wide for my fleetside '66 C20?
 

I'm looking to replace the Eaton HO52 in my '66 C20 with a newer axle with better gearing and parts availability. I found a 2002 "14 bolt", though I don't think that's the correct terminology for '01 and up, with disc brakes from a 2002 Chevy 2500, but I'm afraid it will be too wide to fit my stock type steel wheels inside the wheelwells. The seller measured "around 67-68 inches" from outside or rotor to outside of rotor, and I have read that my HO52 should only be about 65.5" the tires are currently about 1.5" from the wheel well lip, so I'm concerned they would rub.

Has anyone done this swap before? Any idea if it will work?

PS, I'm aware the perches, etc. will need to be modified. I'm just concerned with the width.

What a novel idea. I'm forever in debt to your priceless advice.

I searched all afternoon/evening; this forum, others, google, the 14 bolt bible. There dosent seem to be alot of info available on the '01 and newer full floaters, and some sites show conflicting info on widths and specifics. I am hoping someone who actually has experience with these specific parts can weigh in.

There is a very good writeup on here about a similar swap, but his measured narrower than the axle I'm lookin at, and I believe it was from a 1 ton.

Also remember that the 2002 wheels were negative offset, meaning the wheel mounting surface was further out than most other rear ends. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Thanks for the input, Clyde. After much Google-Fu and measuring, I decided to pass on the '02 axle and look for a narrower '88-'00 version.

Those links appear to be about 1/2 ton axles and don't contain any info about the AAW 10.5" full floater in question, or 14 bolts in general.
