I have been working on this project for a while. I have been meaning to get around to posting a thread on my build but haven't had the time. I have had this truck for about 7 years now. I am only 17 years old so I haven't had the ability to do anything on this project until the past year. I know that it is originally a 1970 GMC, not a 72 Cheyenne Super. I personally think that the old GMC's look like Dodges and I was born and raised a Chevy guy so I will be converting the front end and a few other small things to make it a 72 Cheyenne Super. Here are some pictures of the truck from when I first began to where it is now

Here is some pictures of the interior before and after I took everything out of it. I found it surprisingly simple to take one of these trucks apart. I had it down to a frame, motor, trans, and rear end in about a day.

Sent the cab, the bed, and hood to the media blaster to get stripped. Pulled the motor and trans out for a rattle can restoration, and started sand blasting the frame. At first I was going to use a little sand blaster and strip the frame and just rattle can it but I decided that I would much rather get the frame powder coated and do it right so I don't have to take the hole thin apart ten years from now to redo the frame.

Its amazing what a few cans of spray paint and some elbow grease can do

Replaced the cab corners and rocker panels. I recently did some patch work on the floor board and just finished the C notch on the frame but I don't have any picture yet

Nice work. I take it you guys blasted the cab or did you use some sort of paint stripper?

Graham57a 05-01-2011 01:06 PM

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super First Project

Thank you, we had the cab media blasted along with the rest of the body. Its way easier to just have the hole thing blasted rather then dealing with paint stripper. Plus there is a media blaster about five shops down from where I am at.

nice start keep up the progress , I'm the guy that bought those fenders from you.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super First Project

Oh sweet, hope those worked out for you. I still have that grill if anyone is interested.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super First Project

Does anyone have a radiator support for a 1972 Chevy that they would be willing to part with? I also need a really clean grill and grill surround. Post a reply if you have anything or know of anyone who does. Thank you

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super First Project

I have 2 of them but Im sure shipping would cost a fortune.

Graham57a 05-01-2011 09:29 PM

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super First Project

Yea, I found a few radiator supports out here but everything is rusted out. And all of the grill surrounds that I have seen are dented and banged up. I really don't want to have to buy a reproduction rad support but I might just get the grill

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super First Project

I am sure you already know this, but those fenders will not work with 69-72 Chevy grills. I see you mention the core support but not the fenders, but you may already have the fenders you need.
Just thought I would point it out in case you didn't already know.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super First Project

Yea I already sold the old fenders and replaced them with the correct kind. Thank you tho, that would be a crappy mistake to make. Haha

Took some more pictures of the project today. All of the body is sitting in the paint booth at the shop waiting to get painted and the c notch in the frame is almost done. Ordered some parts from the truck shop today and got a core support from Jerry in Tennessee, he is a great guy to deal with.

Some parts I had laying around in my closet. Rebuilt tilt column, original door panels with repro inserts, original visors, houndstooth seat cover, and a ton of little small things.

Isn't cool when you find stuff you bought and stashed away for your project:D

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super First Project

Thank you. When I was about 8 years old, my dad ran an automotive repair shop and he worked on a truck for a guy named Kevin Bradley who owns a custom hot rod shop in rio dell, california called kreations. I remember watching my dad work on that truck, a 72 c-10 painted copper orange, slammed and completely custom, and telling my dad that I wanted a truck like that when I grew up. Ever since then, my dad has been buying parts trucks, gathering little things here and there, and getting me things to make my build easier. My grandpa also owns a wrecking yard in northern california and he is a hoarder when it comes to early chevy parts.

I love it, haha. My dad is a camaro guy and my basement is filled with NOS parts from an old chevy dealership that we bought out the inventory of. So my entire house is full of parts of every shape and size for everything you can think of. I find new parts all the time :chevy:

I am not sure about just the cab but I had the entire body blasted at once it was 500. The guy I went to is kinda a rip off when it comes to most things, I wouldn't be surprised if you could find a place cheaper. Hope this helps. And thanks, I am kinda new to the forum and I gotta say, it is very encouraging to have everyone compliment the work that you do, it definitely gives me motivation to keep on diggin. :metal:

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super First Project

Thanks guys, it's been kinda hard to get stuff done on the truck cause I have been busy helping my dad on the super late model. I can do a good bit of the work on the frame like cutting material, welding, grinding and such. But my dad doesn't trust me laying down beads that are in high stress areas like the c notch so I kinda have to wait for him on that one. I have been doing some thinking and I am going off to college in August and I would really like to have the truck drivable by then. I know that is kinda a long shot but this summer I plan on working a ton and getting a lot of stuff done on it. I just don't want to leave for school and have a ton of parts laying all over the place. I am stuck on a color decision tho. Originally I wanted to do hugger orange and white like a ton of other people do but I kinda want to be different. Plus I don't really want to pay for all that molding that comes with a two tone paint job. My dad suggested doing just the roof white and the rest of the truck orange but idk. Any ideas? I'll post some pictures of what I was thinking

The first one is my original idea, the second one is my dad's idea, third one makes me wish I kept my fenders, and the last one kinda looks like an old truck my dad used to have

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super First Project

Don't think you can go wrong with any of those...

gcburdic 05-05-2011 09:23 AM

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super First Project

:agree: all those are great color schemes...I'm still partial to the 2-tone though.....do what you'll be happy with.....blue and white is another favorite of mine:D

Graham57a 05-05-2011 12:15 PM

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super First Project

I also like the blue and white but I already got black interior. I think I am gonna go with the hugger orange with the white top (like the 2nd one) but leave off the molding until I can afford it. That way it will still look complete. I should be getting a ton of parts in the mail either tomorrow or early next week. I'll have pictures posted when I get the parts:chevy:

Hard to go wrong on those wheels. I'm also a big fan of the 2 tone

Haha, shhhhh. No I would get the torque thrusts that look just like that but they aren't cobra. I didn't even realize that those were cobra until after I posted it, they are basically the same wheel. :chevy: Um, I think either 22's in the back and 20's in the front or 22's all around
Still debating on the paint, decisions decisions....

They actually make rebuild kits for the heater control but I got two other ones from my grandpa and I am going to make one nice one out of the three that I have. If you want whatever I have left to fix yours, I would be more then willing to give it to you
