Rebuild OE seatbelts

Hello all,

My OE seat belts work somewhat. Does anyone have a link to a good video or PDF on the proper way to recondition them.

I have an extra set and completely ruined one of them attempting to make it better.

I have successfully tightened the retraction spring on one but it still will not retract all the time. If i pull it out, it will retract. But if I am just driving,, move around some and pull it out a little at a time, it will just lazily lay across my shoulder. If i pull it out from there and let it go,, it will retract well.

Any advice?
Chris

I have recently started restoring our seatbelts, and have pretty good luck with getting them retracting again, and making the look a lot better. If you like to see some of the ones I have done, I’ve been posting them on my build thread, the link is on my signature. I keep saying I need to start a Seatbelt Restoration thread, and get them off my build thread. I have done several of the belts for people, they ship them to me, I restore them and send them back. For a fee that is. If your interested in having that service done, PM me.

can the webbing on original seatbelts be dyed to a different color. Say tan to red or black

I wouldn’t advise it. Nor would I attempt it. I have people ask me all the time and I won’t. First it takes too much dye. And the more dye you use, the webbing gets stiffer. And another thing the more dye that’s on them, it will wear off. The way I do them, keeping the same color, I don’t use very much dye at all. So there is less chance of it wearing off.

TKCR I here if you have light color belts and are dying with the leather type dye it works pretty good they have to soak and be {very clean} dark colors have to be dyed the same color. I have been looking in to this but have not got there yet.

:chevy:interesting i have dyed seatbelts that didn't work out. The dye made the material texture to rough.I changed my red interior to black . The black seatbelt were hard to find .I did find them at u-pull-it . Believe me i was shocked when i did. Maybe I took the wrong approach when I dyed the red ones black .

What dye did you use. The can or powder wet dye.

They really need to be clean. But I have seen belts, that people tried to dye different colors, it just never looks good. And if the prep isn’t done correctly, it will peel off the plastic.

I have the opposite problem. Slightest bit of slowing down and my drivers belt locks and wont release until I actually unbuckle it.

No, I don’t think it’s that. Your seatbelts that you restored are the earlier lap belts. They are a lot easier, because there’s not much there for the retractor. It is easily accessed by just pulling up the casing. The 77-87 style has the 3 point retractor, so it’s a bit more complexed and not as easily accessible as the lap belt. I read thru your link:metal:

Maybe I should be on ignore.I never even noticed it was the later seatbelts. I am sorry for misunderstanding.

Anyone get their belts rewebbed? Ssnakeoyl still do them? Got a great set of retractors that the thieves cut the webbing on.

I believe Ssnakeoyls still re-webbs, the best of my knowledge. I believe they are other places too, just do a google search for webbing seatbelts.
