84 Extended Cab

Hi everyone. It’s been a while but I’m back with a new project. My son just picked up his first truck. It’s a 1984 K10 extended cab. I’m not sure who did the body work as there is no tag (I know that at least two custom companies were building these when new). From what I can tell it was originally a 6.2 diesel regular cab. It now has a 350TBI (not running). We trailered it home today and started looking it over. So far I have noticed that when the key is on the drivers side fuel pump (dual tanks) continuously runs, and we have no spark (engine does turn over well).

The wiring leaves a lot to be desired. I am considering removing the TBI and going back to a carb for now. It does need some body work, but we wanted to get it running and driving first. I’m having issues adding photos...can’t seem to get them from my IPad to a hosting site...

Re: 84 Extended Cab

Went to test the coil and found that it wasn’t completely connected to the distributor. Now we have spark (truck will fire on fuel dumped down the TB) but no injector pulse (checked with a Noid light). I’m thinking pickup coil in the distributor...

I then still have the issue of the driver side fuel pump continuously running (not to mention that toggling the tank selector switch doesn’t seem to do anything) but progress is progress.

Cool truck. I have only seen one home made version (but was very good) Wish I had bought it now. Looking forward to your updates.

Dig into the truck some more. I think the pick up coil is causing my injector pulse issue. I pulled the distributor and ran checked it using an ohm meter. Didn’t get a consistent reading (ie) no resistance unless I played with the connections. Either way the distributor does not spin smoothly and the truck has been sitting for an undetermined amount of time. I’ll throw a new distributor in it and go from there. Next up the fuel selector switch. Does anyone know the difference in the D7003 and D7089c switches? From what I can tell, the 7003 switch would have been original on this 84 but the TBI trucks would have ran the 7089....

I do not believe I have seen an extended cab model in person, they sure are neat.

This was the first one I had ever seen. My son wanted something different so we bought it...hopefully it won’t drive me nuts figuring out what was done to the truck before we got it.

Well we installed the new distributor but no joy...still no injector pulse. I have spark and 12 volts to the injectors...

At this point I’m thinking a bad ground somewhere or a fried ECM....thoughts?

Well, went out to try and test a few things and I have an obvious short in the dash. Most likely near the fuse box as I noticed smoke rising near the drivers A pillar. Looks like I’m going to be doing some rewiring.:censored:

I am jealous you have one there, and it looks pretty good from the pics.

In a few months I should still be getting a free 1/2 parted out suburban with CA title issues to build a truck out of. I am torn between going for a true extended cab, or giving it a few more inches behind the bench seats. Similar to what new Ram trucks have.

Do you have jump seats or a small bench in back?

No seats in the back, the way this conversion was done the floor behind the front seats is at the same level as the bed. It a great place for dry storage like tools etc.....

To bad you dont know who did the conversion.

Either way it is a cool score, and what are your sons plan for the truck?

I have seen conversions online only that run the gamut of rear area options.

Re: 84 Extended Cab

Yeah depending on where they extend the frame is what the floor behind the seats is like. The one I almost bought, the guy said in hindsight, he wish he had extended the rails in front of the seats instead of when he did. The kick up for the gas tank kills the floor behind the seat. They are cool though. Good luck on the wiring part. All my old trucks looks like some one ran a lawnmower under the dash as the wiring tool.

I never seem to have much luck with TBI and went to a carb setup instead.

We want to keep it stockish as it will be his daily driver. Maybe upgrade the trans to an overdrive unit. The conversion may have been done by CVI, as it looks similar to their work (based on what I have read and pictures I have seen). The frame length has not been modified from what I have seen, but about 18 inches have been cut from the front of the bed and added to the back of the cab.

Re: 84 Extended Cab

I forgot they did some that way. Just a LWB that extended cab and shortened bed.
