1972 with a stamp on the firewall that none of my other blazers or trucks have,what's it for?

That's the last three digits of the PVI, or Primary Vehicle Identifier.

It is established after the dealer order number is sent to the final assembly location, and is how the vehicle is identified until the cab, trim, and final (or general) assembly sequence numbers are established.

The VIN is also tied to that but nobody cares about the VIN in the assembly plant (other than getting the right one on the right vehicle). The GA sequence number is the gold source.

Used to work at GM. Those numbers are ID numbers for the assembly plant. All major assemblies will have the same number so that they know which parts go to which build sequence. Today it's done with bar codes on decals.
Like Keith said, we never cared about the VIN because that is only given after the vehicles is in it's final stages of assembly.
