steering wheel... Again!

1 Attachment(s)
when i got my jimmy it had an aftermarket steering wheel.
I never liked that steering wheel and after hearing many reviews i ended up buying a comfort grip steering wheel.

while that wheel isn't terrible, see picture, i just don't think it looks right. I'm now thinking that i should go for an truly original look.

Does anyone have a picture of a stock 72 GMC steering wheel i can see?

Does anyone know of a place where i can buy a good quality reproduction steering wheel?

Interesting, it sure looks good in my eyes.

Re: steering wheel... Again!

It looks good in the picture, but i think i should go for the more original big wheel look (17" wheel). I have done so much to keep it bone stock that this seems like it would be a mistake. Maybe i will change my mind (again) but i'm trying to stay as close to stock as i can.

Ok now I understand and agree. I just looked at your build, I hadn't seen it before. Love the color ... Your doing an excellent job!

That's a good looking steering wheel. I might hurt some feelings, but the OEM ones I have seen are UGLY.
Beautiful interior and perfect color, by the way. Do you have a link to your build?

Re: steering wheel... Again!

when i got the truck it had an awful aftermarket steering wheel. i think the horncap said "Rally" on it. It was fugly...!

so i got this steering wheel after looking at dozens in catalogs. To be fair, i'm not super unhappy with this steering wheel, but given how closely i've been trying to stay with original i'm now starting to doubt if i shouldn't go back to one of those 17" wheels...

my build thread is here: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=759763

Outstanding transformation. I still think your current steering wheel is classic and clean and doesn't detract from the originality of the build. It compliments the Jimmy's subtle unique personality like the LED brake lights.
I've been looking for a steering wheel that my wife and I like. I think you found it. Where did you get that one?

Re: steering wheel... Again!

I got the wheel off ebay. you can find it here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/261375860888

the wheel is plenty nice, feel real good and i'm happy about the center cap as well.

i decided to go with LED early on in the build, for all lights except the headlights. I wanted to make sure I was plenty visible and i personally think the old incandescent bulbs are hard to see. i choose to keep the headlights stock, altough if i would have found an exact LED replica i may have changed those too. In the dash i went incandescent as well as under the dash. It was easiest at the time to stick to incandescent there.

The only issue I have with the older wheels is they feel like a tractor when you turn because they are so large. I like the current wheel as well but if you don’t like it swap it out for an original. You can always switch back and forth for driving and show.

I like your comfort grip steering wheel on your Jimmy! Was that just bolt on or did you need an adapter kit? I have a 67 that I’d like to use that wheel on

I've grown to really like that steering wheel. I think it will stay on for a bit longer!

I like that steering wheel as well. And the seats, and the center console, and the AC......

As previously stated I like that steering wheel. I've been looking for a year and that one is the winner. Can anyone tell me if it's made in the USA or China? I couldn't find it on the Ebay page.

I didn't keep the packaging do I don't know. Send the seller a message and ask?
When in doubt I assume China.

I am pretty sure it is a Grant steering wheel. And I am pretty sure they are not made in America

Re: steering wheel... Again!

I'm sure you're correct. If it was made in the US it would cost twice as much.

The wheel in A1971Balzers post, #11 is the GM comfort grip wheel. The OP’s wheel is aftermarket. Looks nice though.

I am a big fan of the comfort grip wheel as it uses no adapters and fits and looks right for the era because it is a factory wheel even if not optional in the truck. They can be had for about $200 complete. Buy one for a 1967-68 Camaro as it has the smaller diameter steering column that is same diameter as the truck column.

67-72 Vette wheel with a Camaro hub. Bolts right in looks great.

That is a steering nice wheel. What did it come stock on again? My 71 is the same color as yours. Where’s you rear view mirror? Thx

It was listed for a '69 Camaro...it came with the hub, horn button, and all the necessary hardware to install...
I have a rear view mirror now...I had to go through a couple of different reproduction ones to get one I liked.....

Re: steering wheel... Again!

In 69 the column got slightly larger in diameter in the Camaro because of the steering wheel lock that was installed with the ignition on the column.

The 67-68 Camaro adapter is the same diameter as the 67-72 truck column for anybody ordering.

This was in my 71Chevy, maybe someone knows what years came with the hard plastic, or this kind with softer rubber, maybe 73 and up.

Good point.....When I ordered the steering wheel and mounting kit....the steering wheel was standard..... but I had to specify the diameter of the hub I needed....which of course is the smaller one...

I just received mine from Brothers. I couldn't install a new steering column and put the same old wheel on....
