Been thinking of buying an old trailer to tow behind my truck. Do you think this one needs a little to much help?

Depends on price, what the interior is like, and if there is a clear title for it.

It's a nice size, he wanted $500.00 for it, but the back was pushed out as you can see, it had about 2ft of raccoon crap in it. It looked like more than I wanted to tackle.

I think I'd pass. I like buying stuff used and that others give up on but that looks a little past what I would want to do!:chevy:

$100, take it or leave it. You do not pay a guy $500 to take the junk that his wife wants him to get rid of. AND have to clean out the coon poop? No

I'd tell him I'll give him $500, and sell him all the coon and rat scat for $250 if he does all the labor for free

I've got one about like that. I was feeling a little guilty asking $200 for mine,and it's coon poop free.

For $500 I myself would pass on this particular one. I see those on Craigslist occasionally and I'm sure you can find a better one.

Here are several that are a lot nicer and might be cheaper in the long run. May be bigger though. My favorite is the Shasta. The Road Runner is very nice inside but sort of bland on the outside. Also, appears to have some water damage inside.

We bought a 1967 Shasta trailer to match the 1967 GMC for $500 and it was in better condition than this. But I will say that working on a trailer was an eye opener. More work than anticipated. You might want to learn about these older trailers before jumping all in.

Depending on what you get, a full rebuild may be in order. My dad built his own after getting discouraged about what he found for sale. This is the trailer he built on a bare trailer frame he bought for $75. It was a big job and cost in the neighborhood of $4k iirc.

That trailer looks rough on the outside so I am guessing the inside is just as bad if not worse!


Many people have built old style campers. Check the web for plans and videos on teardrop trailers, they look cool.

i have partially restored/updated both a vintage 'slide-in' truck camper and a small vintage travel trailer and there is one basic rule for what you want to start with....always:
Little to no rot or water damage......serious golden rule on this. ;)

This is the 'rust' equivalent to classic vehicles in terms of the work effort and money that you will be into in order to remedy the problem.

By all appearances, that trailer shown is past its prime...and I agree with the other members in that you can get a better example to start with.
You will pay more money...but you will not spend the next 2 years of vacation time learning how to rebuild a roof, walls, rotted floor etc.

Here is our latest trailer....not big but easy to deal with.

Most people don't realize the way these trailers are built. The metal is the last part to be put on, so if you need to replace the ceiling or a wall you will have to remove the metal.

You could probably use the frame, windows and maybe the metal siding from the trailer in the photo. The rest would just be a pattern for building a new trailer. That's basically what I did on the '53 I rebuilt a few years ago and it was a lot of work. here's a before and after.

Looks kinda like a Nomad trailer , make sure you check all the corners for rot. Here's mine

Prices on smaller vintage camp trailers are nuts around here. I've had guys pull in the yard to check on the gutted out 15 footer I have for storage out in the back. I paid 50.00 for it with a clear title and had it in my name before towing it home. I'm going to do pretty much what Average Joe's dad did and build a new but vintage looking trailer on that frame. I bought a set of plans off Ebay a while back and bought a copy of the 1937 Popular mechanics shop notes off Ebay (unused original ) that has a set of trailer plans in it.

The book is full of 1937 tech items some that wouldn't fly these days like using a bottle of mercury to make a switch.
