What transmision should i get

hey everybody so i finially blew my transmision in my truck., it was a turbo 350. ive got smallblock. what transmissions could i possibly switch to.

i know i want an automatic and i want more gears. ive got a carb so what are my options on electronicly controlled transmissions?

Re: What transmision should i get

700r4's are usually what get swapped in. now was the th350 a 6" tail or 9" tail? the reason i am asking is if its a 6" tail you may be looking into having a new drive shaft made. if you wanna go newer then a 4l60e is just the more updated computer controlled version of the 700r4. and the 4l80e is the electronic version of the th400

Re: What transmision should i get

Cost wise you would be better off with a 700R4. If you were to go with either a 4L60E or the 4L80E transmissions, the aftermarket controler for those run around $1K

okay so it looks like the 700R4 is the way to go.

what vehicles had those. im pulling mine from a junkyard.

Re: What transmision should i get

ok so you can get those outta camaros, firebirds, corvettes and trucks up to 92 i believe

Make sure you rebuild it... or you'll be doing this all over again... then again, sometimes you can get lucky with junkyard parts...

Re: What transmision should i get

one thing you wanna make sure of though is the mileage. mileage can be a good indicator of condition. and i would drop the pan to do a filter and pan gasket. that way you can see if there are any major chunks and shavings in the bottom

Re: What transmision should i get

okay yall after my junkyard run i found one in a dually c-30. it is hooked up to a big block, will it still bolt up to my smallblock?? and i plan on pulling the pan and cleaning out/checking up the tranny.

can yall tell me more about the 700R4 like what ratios it has and why it is it considered better

the V.I.N. for the dually is
1GCHC33W2ES157245

can anybody tell me anything with the vin??

700R4s didnt come in 1ton trucks or behind big blocks. Stock 700R4/4L60s do not like abuse & the throttle valve cale ajustment & geometry is critical. Small & big blocks have the same bellhousing bolt pattern.

Re: What transmision should i get

700's were in alot of vehicles. camaro, impala, caprice, delta 88, s-10s, and just about any chevy or gmc pickup from the 80's that has overdrive in it. if you are looking at the trucks make sure you are looking at '93 and earlier. '93 was the first year for the 4l60e which is the electronic version of the 700 and they both have the same pan on them.

Re: What transmision should i get

but this truck had the rectangular transmission pan

Re: What transmision should i get

700's are generally geared lower in first and have a nice lil over drive gear.. and the tendency to grenade quite often... mine is doing great after 200,000 miles and at least one rebuild thought and its ALL IN THE TV CABLE

DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT DRIVE ONE UNTIL THE THROTTLE VALVE (TV) CABLE IS ADJUSTED PROPERLY!!!! YOUR TRANS WILL LAST YOU ABOUT 500 MILES (IF YOUR LUCKY)

if its totally square its a 700r4 if its got a corner "cut" off it is a th350

my guess sounding from the truck i would say a th400... but i'm far from a trans expert that is just gm's heavy duty trans

Captainfab 04-11-2010 11:58 PM

Re: What transmision should i get

My guess would be that it's a TH400 since it is in a C30, unless someone put a different trans in it. Here is a link to help you ID a TH400.....

Pick up the phone and call your local Chevy dealer, if they are worth their salt they should be able to nail it down for you. I think they go back to '85 or so.

Re: What transmision should i get

okay yea the rear end of the c-30 it is out so its on the ground and it has step bars on the sides so i can only look under it from the front and it has a "corner cut out" on the front passenger side. that sounds like a 350 right?

as for the 80's oldsmobile cutlass supreme i found that looks like it had a 700r4, i looked up the vin online and found out it originally had a 3.8 v6 with 2bl carb. i looked under the hood and i know it has a small block with a 4bl and it looks factory with the power steering and a/c setup, but obvoiusly not. so whoever swapped the motor on this thing could have put a 700r4 in it.

Heres some pan configurations. The Olds chould have a 2004R or a metric 200 who knows? If it has a metric 3speed transmission thats why its in the boneyard;)

Re: What transmision should i get

you want an 88-92 700R4. Earlier ones are weak and shift poorly. Here is how to identify these:

http://www.hotrodders.com/articles/T...ification.html

Also, if you're not sure because the numbers are all greasy the later ones have a "vein" running up midway on the case. Also, you want one with the cable speedometer tailshaft. I switched one in the yard.

Check out this web site. It's got some good info on your swap. TH350 to a 700R4. Looks like the guy did his homework.
