Anyone have this original in-bed spare tire carrier mounted?
 

I believe the bracket below was common for 67-72. Thing is, I happily threw mine away decades ago when I had visions of restoring my former bed HA!. Never did have the bolt or nut(s). Anyway, I believe these brackets were mounted between the LH cab and wheel well from factory.

Reason for the post:

1. I have a "new" bed. It's super duper:chevy:, but lacks the screw holes for the carrier bracket. Can anyone offer a measurement for where that mounts to the bed? The carrier has to be vertical, so a measure or two should work fine. I checked the assembly manual for 10 minutes and did find one. It's a different carrier, possibly used where a gas tank is under the bed. Any volunteers to index the manual? Kidding. Bed...Bed.....Bed.......More bed

2. Picture(s) of the correct bolt and nut(s) to mount the wheel appreciated too, especially for a C-10 short bed. Here's the trick......Thanks to a board member there are "three bolts different sizes and lengths to match up to the vehicle".

Not sure if these will help much,as mine is a longbed. SSTim also said the bolt for the wheel is not factory. It is supposed to slide in the slot on the bracket. I would get more pictures and measure , but my son is driving the truck at the moment.

I believe the bottom uses existing bedside to floor bolt holes. Then you drill where the top lands on the bed side flange. That's how mine was anyway on a 67 SWB.

Thanks for the pictures and the index. Concerning the index, do you know the purpose for the "X" in columns D through S?

This index is AWESOME. I'm numbering every other page and so far everything matches up.

I used to have one of those too, without the bolt. Don't for the life of me know what ever happened to it.

I have one too but without the hardware. pretty common back in the day in the south west as fewr roads were paved and even two wheel drive trucks needed the clearance behind the rear axle.

wish somebody reproed the whole set up. Id buy one or two just for the hardware.

could you show some close ups of the hardware...please!

Nuts and bolts, nuts and bolts, anyone?

I believe the screws (really bolts) are high crown phillips head. They may be the same screws as what's used to mount the jack handle behind the door (5/16"). The top screws take a washer and nut each. The bottom screws use that and lock washers.

Here's nut & bolt that may be right. Be cool if it is, because I just bought the set.

My short bed fleetside had it mount on the drivers side but behind the wheel arch, next to the tailgate.
I took it off when I sprayed the bed with bedliner but you can still see the old paint marks where it was mounted on the upper rail. My truck is parked at my office so I can get you a picture tomorrow with measurements if it helps.

I have a Cheyenne super short bed with two mounted in it one on each side behind cab , if you want I can send pics or post them

Do a search for P13 "ss tim" and you will find a number of threads.

There are only three locations that are factory. Both are the left front side of a fleetside bed. Basically its the same location relative to the wheel housing. The difference is the distance from the bed front be it a SWB, LWB or a Longhorn.

It picks up two production bolt holes on the floor but the details escape me at the moment.

The low crown phillips are factory for the upper two fasteners though and I still don't have a proper picture of the carriage bolt used to secure the tire to the mount. As I said before it (the shank square) indexes in the slot as an anti-rotation measure yet slides up or down as need to center in the wheel assembly resting on the bed floor.

Need to remember these were sold over the counter as kits and any number of locations can be found in the wild. My 72 (as found) had a homemade carrier in the left rear. Handy yet out of normal sightlines.

I caught quite a few of your posts beforehand Tim. Informative as usual. Concerning the screws, those are "low crown"? What do the bottom screws look like? If memory serves me (15 years since I removed mine), I'm "reminded" the bottom screws may differ. The tops look like the screw for mounting the jack behind the door.

Someone has an original nut and bolt for SWB........Pics?

Anyone know if the spare tire is meant to rest on the floor of the bed when it is fastened to these brackets? Or does the entire weight of the wheel and tire stay up off the bed floor - in other words hang on the bracket itself?

I'm thinking it would be handy if I could sweep or hose the debris out of the bed without removing the spare.

I don't want to hijack the thread so the following is just food for thought - but for those of us who don't yet have a bracket - wouldn't something like this be pretty easy to make out of a piece of slotted strut channel and a couple of spring nuts and L brackets from the local Home Depot?

I think the answer to your first question is they're meant to rest on the floor. Less weight on the user and the bracket.

I am surprised no one has a picture of the correct wheel retainer bolt !!!!
The spare tire bracket might not be rare, but the hardware seems to be! LOL

I'm not so sure its mounted bass akwards.

Every one I have seen since way back was mounted the way mine is. wonder what the factory assembly manual indicates or the parts catolog.

Here was the location of mine before the bedliner. Sounds like it was definitely an aftermarket location.

Here it is now. The holes through the top rail definitely look like a DIY. The upper washer, nut and bolt are your garden variety hardware store quality. The lower mount used only one of the existing bed mounts.

I don't have the manual in front of me, but this works. On a side note:mm:, say, by chance does anyone have a picture of the correct nut and bolt? SWB a bonus.

Another one needing to see what the correct bolt and nut setup looks like. Mine has the one installed at the factory with the factory orange paint on everything. Before I put the tank in the front of the cab I used it all the time and just used an old spare tire mount hook bolt that was in the trunk of one of the cars I scrapped out. When I put the tank under the bed I'll put the spare back in that mount.

Thanks for the guys that don't have a manual! Odd that they show a double nut on the carriage bolt! Wouldn't that be a hoot to now whats stamped on the head of the carriage bolt! For restorers of course!LOL

Also odd that they show the tire lifted off the bed. I guess it would be good to keep the area under the tire clean as 71CHEVYSHORTBED402 suggested, but wouldn't that tend to warp the steel wheel with just one mounting point over time.
