Longbed = more space to haul but harder to park and maneuver.

Shortbed = easier to park and maneuver, lighter, but less space to haul.

What else?

Shorts look cool to some , probably are quicker, better MPG(?) maybe get stolen more (?).

Longs better control towing. Give me a Longhorn or a One Ton any day. After the current shorty frenzy reverses and people are trying to figure out how to lengthen their beds, I'll be ahead of the game.

Have had them both. My current daily driver is a long bed. It drives good, rides good and is not an issue with parking in most places. 6 years or so of driving it everyday and no one has ever said a bad word about it. Many have said "I'm a short bed guy but this truck looks good".

To me its a tossup. Longbeds are becoming unique in their own right. Shortbeds have always been popular. I say go with what you got and people are still gonna give you the thumbs up in traffic either way.

What do you plan on doing with it?I have a lowered long bed.Some would say that's useless.I love it easier to load stuff in and I've used it at least seven times to move.Most of those moves the tail gate lined up perfect with the top of the porch.It's your truck do what ever you want to do.

I guess I should have also mentioned that it isn't about looks or what others think. My question was purely for practical reasons.
What are the advantages or disadvantages of having one or the other?

For practical reasons - a long bed is always the best.

My daily is a shortbed squarebody - it was sketchy trying to bring home LONG pieces of lumber or siding or pipe.

Having said that, I like shortbeds; I've cut down three trucks so far:

'77 Chevy - Long to short
'61 Chevy - Long to short
'78 F-100 - Long to Bronco

sliding in 8 ft sheets of construction material and shutting the tailgate is pretty great

Or with a Longhorn laying a bunch of 10 ft pipe in the bed diagonally and shutting the gate.

I had a 68 short box loaded with sand where the guy at the scale slams open his window and yells 1.8 ton. I say good truck and he says must be.

I don't know how the 66 with 8' box would do hauling that kind of weight but yes it does haul 16' lumber.

BTW about 45 years ago I had a sling of 16' lumber on a 65 Mercury P/U with a 352 and the front wheels came off the ground when going over some railway tracks. With a six I would not have made it home.

I've got to learn to stop abusing these things.
