fuel guage fix (good enough version)

time to fix another of mr good enough's work. he relocated the tank to the rear but instead of hooking up the factory gauge he hung an auto meter under the dash with cable ties...... good enough right!!!!!! I am assuming that if i just take the 2 wires from the auto meter that there should be 2 corresponding hook ups behind the factory gauge. or is there something else I might need before I pull the cluster back???

The stock fuel sender has one wire that connects to a terminal on the fuse panel labeled "FUEL GA". This is just a guess, but you might need to connect one of your wires to ground and the other to the fuse panel terminal.

Ok the wires on the gauge are power ground and signal. If hook signal wire to fuse box fuel gauge spot nothing happens. Im wondering if factory gauge is buggered. If ground the spot in the fuse box can anyone tell me if the gauge should move???

With nothing connected to the gauge, it should point to 3:00 (to the right). If you connect the fuse box fuel gauge spot to ground, then the gauge should point to Empty. The sender is supposed to provide a connection to ground through its internal resistance that varies depending on the level of the tank.

Here are instructions for testing your sender and gauge:

The sender is definitely working because the autometer gauge works so i will have to pull the cluster and look at the gauge

The previous owner installed that gauge for a reason. I think you are on the right track looking at the stock gauge. Here are some possibilities:

Bad ground connection for gauge cluster - there is a black wire with a clip on it that comes from the gauge cluster connector and should be clipped to the metal dash

Bad resistor on the fuel gauge - It's the ceramic thing that connects two of the posts

Bad electrical connection somewhere between the gauge and the fuse panel terminal
