1997 gmc sas and other stuff.

Ok so I finally started on my pickup, actually the sas is almost done. I would have posted pictures awhile ago but I didn't have my computer.

Here it is when I got it. Except for the primer spots, It had a couple of dents that I got fixed.
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0032.jpg

Then I put a two inch block in it, cranked the torsion bars, and got some different rims and tires really cheap.
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0075.jpg

Then the work begins.10 bolt out.
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0213.jpg
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0212.jpg

14 bolt in, and changing gears. I added a leaf in the rear, and put in a five and a half inch block.
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0233.jpg

IFS crap out.
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0215.jpg
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0214.jpg

We got a sas kit from off road direct. Front spring hanger in.
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0216.jpg

Rear spring mounts, and springs in.
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0222.jpg

Dual shock hoops.
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0224.jpg

Front axle. dana 60.
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0223.jpg

Then replaced everything on the front axle.
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0244.jpg

Front axle in and shocks on.
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0236.jpg

I put a two inch spacer on the rear and a half inch on the front. Which made the rear 72 inches wide, and the front 71 and a half. so the front is only a half inch narrower.
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0235.jpg

Heres what it looks like now. with 35 inch tall tires, and 16 inch rims.
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0262.jpg
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0261.jpg

I also found a tonneau cover for only 80 dollars, heres the best pic I have of it.
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0263.jpg

Heres it parked beside my jeep, which also has 35 inch tall tires on it, there about the same height.

Re: 1997 gmc sas and other stuff.

nice work, what kind of other work was involved in the front axle as far as brakes, wheels, steering, trans crossmember work etc.?

I always see guys do SAS conversion but never see what parts they use or need and what they have to fab or mod to make brakes and steering work or wheels.

I actually switched the balljoint axle out for a kingpin last weekend, so when I get new pics up Ill be able to answer your question better.

Re: 1997 gmc sas and other stuff.

I took the ball joint axle out.
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0270.jpg

heres the kingpin axle
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0271.jpg

got it in, and I still need to put new lockouts, barings in the pinion, steering stabilizers on, and I think I'm going to put a track bar on also.
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0277.jpg
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0279.jpg

I also put another inch in the rear, here it is
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0284.jpg

then the tires weren't balanced right so I put my jeeps 35 inch mud tires on it and it drives fine so ill get mine rebalanced and put them on sometime.
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0285.jpg
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0286.jpg
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0287.jpg

I also had the exhaust done
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0275.jpg
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0274.jpg
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0273.jpg
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0272.jpg

and benoit454 heres some stuff I had to do to get things to work. I had to take a notch out of the steering arm so it wouldn't hit the shock mounts.
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0281.jpg
then I had to flip one of the cross members over so it wouldn't hit the rear drive shaft.

Re: 1997 gmc sas and other stuff.

I also picked up a tahoe for $150 that has paintable bumpers, and the front one has fog lights, and it has inside window parts that I need for my other project.

Re: 1997 gmc sas and other stuff.

nice work so it's all basically stock parts? what did your front axle come from?

rocking chevy 09-05-2011 03:46 PM

Re: 1997 gmc sas and other stuff.

yea its pretty much all stock from some vehicle, the leaf springs are 2.5 inch lift springs from skyjacker for a 73-87 chevy pickup. the axle is from a 91 f350 ford.

benoit454 09-05-2011 07:19 PM

Re: 1997 gmc sas and other stuff.

awesome and all the steering and brakes is from the same truck and hooked up to yours without haveing to buy anything else?

I can handle buying some of the bracket kits to hang the springs, but when it comes to the brakes and steering etc. I get lost.

rocking chevy 09-05-2011 08:39 PM

Re: 1997 gmc sas and other stuff.

I bought a new pitman arm(attaches to the steering gearbox), and the high steering arm(the thing I took a notch out of). Then you can buy a drag link, but I just made mine( if your good at making things then you could also, otherwise theirs might work). You can get everything at offroaddirect.com, but if I were you Id only buy the shock hoops and shock mounts that go on the axle, but Id make the spring mounts, because I had to redrill the holes to mount it and you can't put the tow hooks back on with theirs.

What size lift spring is in the front, 2" or 4"?

rocking chevy 10-05-2011 08:49 AM

Re: 1997 gmc sas and other stuff.

2.5 inch soft ride springs in the front.

My god, that truck is gorgeous. And so much work put into it to make it that way.

rocking chevy 10-19-2011 10:45 PM

Re: 1997 gmc sas and other stuff.

Thanks, I still have to put the steering stabilizers on the axle, put my stereo in(and switch my dash at the same time since its cracked), and paint it, then its finished.

cool dude, should turn out great.

Re: 1997 gmc sas and other stuff.

I got the front windows tinted 20% to match the rear.
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0297.jpg
I also took the tonneau cover off and put in a chest tool box. I liked how the tonneau cover looked, but I couldn't haul anything taller than the bed so it kinda was an inconvenience.
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0298.jpg
I used two 2 and a half inch aluminum square tubing and put it between the box and the bed on each side then ran two bolts through the box to the bed.
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_0300.jpg
I also put in four tie downs in the bed, one in each rear corner, and one at the front of each wheel well. I padlocked a chain to one, then ran it through my spare tires rim, then padlocked it to the one in the opposite corner. Its only temporary until I make a holder inside the bed.
