Rack and Pinion

OK, I searched this and alll I can find are people wanting to convert to.

I have an 04 Silverado Crew that the seals are leaking. Is it a pain to replace the seals, anybody have any experience. I have never done a Rack and Pinion, I have rebuilt steering gear boxes.

I have heard they are not bad, but never have done one . Never had one go bad on the trucks I have had. My friend has the one and it is approaching 300K and still original.

Hopefully someone will chime in for ya soon that may have done one.

Those year trucks have a regular box, not a rack and pinion. They can be re sealed, rebuilt or replaced. What is leaking on yours? Are you sure it's not the lines, those are known to seep/leak. My 03 had close to 200k on it and never an issue with the box.

I think I'd stick with the Saginaw steering box if that's what you have. They put those on the heavier chassis trucks for a reason.
Lot6s of places to get those boxes. GM, Chrysler, and AMC used them for decades. You can order a different steering gear ratio for your Saginaw without going to a lighter duty steering system.

The light duty trucks (1500) in the 99-06 were all rack and pinon on the ones I have owned or worked on. The 4WD, HD, and up ones had the old style boxes. At least that was my experience. As you mentioned they can all be resealed, I just have never done one myself.

If you dig into the 73-87 manuals post you'll find the steering box tech textbook
The 1980 & prior service or unit repair manuals have some pretty decent information on rebuilding them. The specs might've changed but the basics of how they come apart and go back together did not.
