What’s a good HEI for a big block not looking to spend a fortune but don’t want cheap junk. I was looking at this

Have you considered an HEI that somebody has pulled from a Chevy truck? I have a used one and it is great, hasn't given me a hint of problems. You could just post a want to buy ad in the parts section and see who says what. Perhaps on the 73-87 parts board. I've got too much Chinese junk for my truck already, so when it comes to something I can get from other folks here on the board I go for it.

I run the msd street fire. By the time you rebuild a junk yard version you can buy a brand new one cheaper.

If you by a quality aftermarket or a factory unit plan on having it curved on a distributor machine for good results after installation.
Don't waste your money and time on a cheap unit. The low price comes from undersized bearings, no heat treating, a poorly designed advance mechanism and so on and so forth. But they will make it nice and shiny.

Look on ebay, 75.00 for a new complete gm style hei. Or go to skip whites web site. 250.00 is redickulous................

I just finished installing an HEI distributor in my 68 C20 with a 396. Started with a used GM HEI and installed the Petronix Flamethrower (Multi Spark) tune up kit in it.

Being on a very tight budget I have resorted to them twice. One internal coil type and one external coil type. Both had control module failures very early on. One in less than 2000 miles and the other in less than 500 miles. Runs fine one day then won't start the next morning in both cases.

If you choose to run one of these low cost versions be prepared to trouble shoot the ignition system to figure out why your truck won't start. Many parts that could cause it but mine were both the ignition control module.

DUI is a Great HEI unit. If you call them directly you can get a custom calibration on the spring and weights with an adjustable vac adv.
