GT-40 with aluminum body at Pebble Beach
1 Attachment(s)
A guy l worked with at a Ford dealership 30+ years ago will be revealing his GT-40 tomorrow for the first time in public at PB. It’s only 1 of 2 built with a entire aluminum body (the other one was destroyed in a crash). His was also involved in a crash, but someone had the sense to keep it. When he bought it, over 30 years ago it was totally dismantled, but it was all there. It’s been at a GT-40 restoration shop (the guy has restored more GT-40 than anyone else) for about 15 years. Rex, the owner, picked it up in Atlanta 3 weeks ago and brought it back to Indiana. Only immediate family was allowed to see it. This is a pretty big deal for our little town (population 4000) to have just a regular guy that owns such a rare and extremely valuable car. Looking forward to watching online tomorrow as they show the 80? cars that were chosen to participate this year. The pic is circa 1966 and is one of the few vintage photos of it.

That's one of those rare cars that even if he spent a million plus on the restore he's going to come out way ahead if he ever sells.

It looks great. I hope it gets an award of some kind. Keep us posted.

Re: GT-40 with aluminum body at Pebble Beach
Anyone who lives in the area could check it out, they only charge $450 a head to get in (l believe that includes parking :)). He will be selling it sometime in the near future, insurance on a multi million dollar vehicle is expensive

Was that the one shown on Chasing Classic Cars?

Re: GT-40 with aluminum body at Pebble Beach
Nice...but at 450 a head I'm good with just seeing pics...

He got 2nd place in his class. A 1960 Porsche race car beat him.

Awesome!!! Not as good as first but judging can be fickle. I'm glad he got some recognition.

Re: GT-40 with aluminum body at Pebble Beach
I remember watching the endurance sports car racing in the mid 60s even with the limited television coverage there was back then. The American made GT40 was a beautifully designed car and very competitive. It believe it is told that Ford tried to buy Ferrari, who wouldn't sell, then built their own racecar to beat Ferrari. And did. The more modern GT40s are nice but it is sure nice to see an original. Congrats to your friend. That's quite a nest egg your friend has been building. ;)

Re: GT-40 with aluminum body at Pebble Beach
That is quite a tale of dedication to a very special car. He never wavered in all those years. Too bad the hoity toity judges don't take soulful content into consideration.

Re: GT-40 with aluminum body at Pebble Beach
Since it is one of one and has a race history, I could see that car selling for between 6 and 10 million dollars at a high end auction. Your friend has a great 401K.
