Shifter question

I have a th350 in my truck now with column shift. I will soon be putting a 5.7 ls and 4l60e in it. my question is, do I need the stock shifter that came out of the trans am or any parts of it to connect to my column shifter? If I buy the lokar kit does it include everything I need to attach to the tranny and the truck? because I have the entire car, parting it out, and a guy wants to buy the shifter but Ive been afraid to sell it to him, thinking i may need it. thanks for any help or pics

Re: Shifter question

Your stock shifter linkage should work just fine, the only reason it wouldnt is if the trans was moved forward or back from the original spot, which shouldnt happen since you are putting in a 5.7

Re: Shifter question

Depending on where you get the motor and trans to sit in your truck. You may be able to use the trucks stock shifter linkage. If not the Lokar ACA-1800 linkage will fix you up. No need for the car shifter.

Re: Shifter question

Like what the others said, you don't need any part of the car shifter. And it doesn't really matter where your engine sits, but it will most likely be further back than your original transmission, you can drill new holes in the frameto move the original shift linkage bracket back to work. Just line it up with the shift shaft coming out of the trans. Since you're using a car trans, it won't have the neutral safety switch on the side of it so the shift shaft on the trans will be shorter than that of a truck 4l60e, so so that will help you in that you shouldn't have to narrow the piece of linkage that goes between the frame and trans.

Re: Shifter question

the car shift cable mounts to the side of the transmission. so on the truck i will be mounting it on the frame of the truck? sorry for the questions, this is my first swap

The Lokar kit should work fine, but you may have trouble getting it into 1st gear (manually). Mine will go into P, N, R, D, 3, and 2 (kinda), but 1st is out of the column's range.

Re: Shifter question

my 87 came with a 700r4 which is a 4 speed column, made my own engine mounts, relocated the factory frame mount for the linkage up 1 hole (used a 3/8 aluminum spacer and new hardware) and I have full range of the trans.... if you cant get into 1st you gonna miss out. So if you have a 4 spd column, your set, if you have a 3spd column, go to the bone yard and pick one up.. theyre about 100 bucks.
