3 on the tree part help

hey everyone, new guy here. So I picked up a 69 a few weeks back that the man swore was his daily driver, etc etc. needless to say I took it out the other day and ended up towing it home.

watched a youtube video on adjusting the 3 on the tree:

and ended up with this:

http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/h...ABF608B50.jpeghttp://i257.photobucket.com/albums/h...1BB072DD8.jpeg

I cant get the darn thing to line back up to get the bolts threaded. The larger ring and smaller ring also fell out and it seems something should have been retaining them? or the clamp that I slid down holds them in when tightended?
Also it appears I am clearly missing the black boot over and wondering if someone more experienced could lay eyes and let me know if there is more that I am missing and if that might explain why it is so dang hard to switch gears and it is always getting stuck.

Thank you in advance

I'm no expert, but having a few of these vehicles over the years there's some things you seem to be careful with. I've had two separate ones that would get stuck in-between gears if you try and shift while taking a hard corner. I guess from body flex, etc. So when driving these vehicles I had set my self up for the hard corners and shift before the turn starts. If not it would get stuck in-between gears and then I'd have to finesse (in my case a small hammer) the rods back in place under the hood.

On what secures the rods there at the column is just those metal C looking pieces that press against the rods when you tighten the nuts. I don't see those in your pictures, but it may just press against the washer looking pieces on yours. And if you loosen those nuts to far the rods can fall out (don't ask how I know)
