292 i6 in place of 6.5 diesel.

I m putting a 1970 292 into my diesel k30.
It has a 4l80 transmission.
I need a flywheel for the 292, plus correct motor mounts.
Any idea what parts I need to find?

Re: 292 i6 in place of 6.5 diesel.

a 4l80 is A LOT of transmission to go behind a i6....
and youll need a flexplate,not a flywheel
there is a .400 difference in crankshaft stickout between a LS and a v8...but I'm not sure about a diesel crank...
you may be better off swapping to a 700r4 than trying to mix and match parts
what kind/yr of truck are you putting this in?

Re: 292 i6 in place of 6.5 diesel.

It's an 86 k30. It already has the 4l80, and np205 t case.
It's not a daily driver, it's a tow rig. 456 gears, Detroit locker and an Eaton in the diffs.
I'm going to use what I have.
Just need to find what I need.
I do need a flywheel btw, plus a flex plate.
Thanks.

Re: 292 i6 in place of 6.5 diesel.

Keep the 4L80 it is much better then any TH700r4, and since you have a heavy drivetrain. The 700 would be a liability.

Also get a proper torque converter. Diesels have something like a 1200rpm stall. Your big 6 will need 1800, and be good with up to 2200.

Re: 292 i6 in place of 6.5 diesel.

what Zieg said, just have to find some 292 square body 4x4 6 cyl frame stands. OR start fabricating something. Do you have the block mounts?

Re: 292 i6 in place of 6.5 diesel.

You obviously already have some sort of controller for the 4L80E, but you will now need some sort of TPS on your 292's carb. I agree that you will need a set of squarebody 292 engine mount brackets.

Not criticizing, just learning here... Why would you need a flywheel and a flexplate?

Nessmuk 10-21-2019 08:39 AM

Re: 292 i6 in place of 6.5 diesel.

It doesn't have a flywheel on it.
As my idea where to buy all the parts I need?

Re: 292 i6 in place of 6.5 diesel.

That's what were trying to point out...
If your gonna run a auto behind the i6, you will need a flexplate, not a flywheel....a flywheel is for a manual trans setup with clutch and pressure plate bolted to it....
What your trying to do never came from the factory,so you wont be able to just go to the store and buy the parts you need...its been so long since they made the i6 that parts are scarce in the junk yards also, so it may take alot of searching....the 4l80 bellhousing should bolt up to the i6 no problem...there will be one bolt that cant be used though...with a flexplate on the i6, I'm not sure how the 4l80 torque converter will work....I know on gas burners there is a .400 difference between a LS and SB that has to be made up when mixing old with new..just not sure about how the diesel was setup...
Also the 4l80 torque converter bolt pattern wont line up with i6 flexplate holes..so you'll need to elongate the holes or drill new ones

A flexplate for a 292 is no problem to find on google..heres one....

Re: 292 i6 in place of 6.5 diesel.

I thought the flywheel had the starter teeth on it.
What flex plate do I need? A 250 six and drill it?

I added this to above post but here it is again...https://www.12bolt.com/store/p123/Flexplate_292.html

Re: 292 i6 in place of 6.5 diesel.

Manual trans gets flywheel, automatics get flex plates, and yes they both carry the starter ring gear.
Rock Auto will sell you a 292 flex plate, be aware they only fit 292. 250 plates are NOT compatible.
86 did not come with 4l80E so you already have a mix. If it is an early version then the converter is TH400 compatible and you 'should' be ok with a 292/TH400 flex plate. If later all bets are off, get the 400 plate and start measuring. Are you sure it's and 80 and not a 400?

Motor stands on the frame - if you find a set send them to me. I have never seen the 292 4wd combo in person. 250 4wd versions are rare enough that I plan to make my own, and I don't know if 292 versions interchange with them. I believe they are not directly interchangeable with 2wd stands. And each frame package has its own unique height and thickness.
Whee!

It's a 4l80. US shift computer. Built by Jakes in Texas.

Maybe I can jury rig mounts from the 6.5 diesel ones.

Re: 292 i6 in place of 6.5 diesel.

D13...I was just thinking the same thing...a 4l80 never had a 205 behind it...and it takes a expensive adapter to make it work...

so are you sure it's a 4l80?

A 4l80 did have a np241 behind it the early 90s suburban...

Re: 292 i6 in place of 6.5 diesel.

The 4l80 did have a 205 behind it. One year. In the crew cab k30.
I found one and have the 205 behind my 4l80.

Re: 292 i6 in place of 6.5 diesel.

I stand/sit corrected...after a lot of looking it seems they did have a 1yr only 4l80/205 k30....never knew that....

Not a problem, steel soldiers put me into it.

Here is the thread that I was thinking about with some info about 4L80E's and flexplates.

Re: 292 i6 in place of 6.5 diesel.

4l80e flex plate / torque converter has 6 holes. im pretty sure a th400 only uses 3. You should see if your 6.5 flex plate bolts up to the 292 crank snout. my 292 is a manual and uses the same clutch as a gas motor so the crank length and standoff is the same.

you will need to figure out a starter. when I swapped transmission on my 292 the original sm420 starter bolted to the bell housing. the newer engine / transmission combos bolt the starter to the block. my particular block was never drilled for a starter from the factory (1966). apparently the later 292 blocks were drilled.

the 292 uses an offset passenger side motor mount that will not bolt directly into your cross member. im sure you could fab up a passenger side mount pretty easily.

292 is also taller and longer that the v8 so the fan shroud might need some attention.

292 power steering and alternator mounts can be hard to find if you don't have a set.

Re: 292 i6 in place of 6.5 diesel.

Luckily it does have the brackets. I'm not sure about the frame mounts, I've asked.

Re: 292 i6 in place of 6.5 diesel.

292 flex plates are unique at the crank pattern. The 6.5 flex plate will not work. Three of the converter bolts 'should' line up since the trans works on the TH400 pattern.

As noted, 72 and earlier manual trans motors had starters bolted to bell housing. All others should have starter hoes drilled in block. Be sure to get eh correct starter for the flex plate, most likely one for the 'large' ring gear.

There is an ebay seller who offers accessory mount sets for a 292, with PS and AC options.

Re: 292 i6 in place of 6.5 diesel.

You do not have to use all six convertor bolts, just use the 3 that line up.

Exactly what I was thinking. That 292 would have a hard time developing enough torque and HP to overcome the strength of a standard three bolt connection...Interesting swap, please do keep us updated! ;)

Re: 292 i6 in place of 6.5 diesel.

Not to say your wrong, but a 1986 K30 should of come with a 6.2 (non turbo) diesel. The 6.5 turbo diesel did not start until 1988.
Either way both of those engines should have a 6 bolt flywheel and torque convertor. You could get a new 292 flywheel and using the old flywheel as a template, mark out where the other 3 bolt holes should be and drill them out.
I'm also currently building a 1986 D30 (ex military) with a SBC/4L80 & 205 with D60 front/14 Bolt FF with 4.56 gears. I have a 292 sitting in the corner that I was thinking of using instead of the SBC. So I'm defiantly following your build..
