what are you guys getting for mpg?

been through my second tank in my 2011 1500 4x4 5.3 3.08 ext.cab.
both times its only got 13.5!!!!

seriously?? the window sticker showed a low of 15,hiway 21. is there something i should check with my dealer with or is this normal.other people say they get about 18.id be good with that. cant believe i upgraded 21 years newer and only getting a mile or so better mpg.

im not going by the little computer thing either, this is............fill it up,drive, fill it up and calculate.if i went by the computer in the truck id only be getting 11mpg

Re: what are you guys getting for mpg?

We have the same truck, But mine is a GMC. Crew cab, 5.3, 6 speed, 3.08 gears. There for a while I was only gettin about 13, then I started driving more sensibly, kept it under 80, used the cruise, and now im gettin 15.2. I am completely happy with that because i only drive down rural 2 lane farm roads with hardly any highway driving.

Re: what are you guys getting for mpg?

15.8mpg 2008 ccsb 5.3L w/ AFM, 3.42 gears, 2wd. That's a 2 month average, mixed driving.

Honestly thought it would be a little better with the AFM. My brother in law gets just above 16 in his identical truck that's 4x4 (I've seen his driver center).

Don't believe the "other people". Guys always tell me they get 18,19,20 mpg in their trucks but you never know what/when they're talking about. I can jump on the highway, drive for 2 hours and get 19mpg but it's not realistic because you have to get off the highway, you know? I've had a bunch of the GenIII and GenIV 5.3L's in SUV's and trucks and never gotten better than 15mpg average. In fact my 4.8L 2wd 2008 got about 14mpg w/ 3.08 gears.

Yeah i was hoping to see a big difference with the AFM, but I havent. I would rather just not have it.

I'm going to delete mine internally and from the computer when I swap cams.

Re: what are you guys getting for mpg?

thanks guys for all your feedback.i live in the mountain of pa. so maybe that doesnt help it.seems like its always shifting.the other option was 3.42 gearing but it thought 3.08 would be better.

Re: what are you guys getting for mpg?

I'm getting 13 mpg on my ext cab 2010 4x4 with 3.42's with 800 miles on it, using the computer. I've been letting it warm up in the mornings thanks to the cold temperatures. My 04 ccsb with 373's and 06 impala ss with the 5.3's only got 15 on average. I expect this new truck to be a little better but only time will tell.

Re: what are you guys getting for mpg?

will keep u updated on the mpg's. as far as four cylinder mode,i cant hear i difference.my daily highway driving is hilly so it doesnt kick in all that much.

Re: what are you guys getting for mpg?

I work at a chevy dealer, and in my opinion AFM sucks. It does not seem to help mileage that much, and greatly increases potential for mechanical problems. I have seen a couple at work with AFM problems related to lifters.

Not the same truck, but my 06 5.3 2wd ECSB with 20's and 3.73 gears gets between 14.5 and 15.5 depending on weather/temps. So call it 15mpg average overall. I have 40k miles and originally had 3.23 gears from factory. Prob lost 1 mpg with gear swap, but comes alive quicker. I also have the GM cold air kit and a one in two out flowmaster.

Re: what are you guys getting for mpg?

They were doing OK, then the gov. started forcing states to run E10 year round which is not as efficient as "straight gas." Glad to see your mileage improve. I think people forget how massive these trucks are. Trucks are larger and much more capable than they were 10-15 years ago, today's 1/2 ton could probably out perform a 90's 3/4 ton. An ex. cab 4x4 also weighs in around 5,400lbs!!!

My wife's 2011 v6 mustang was only getting 19mpg when we first bought it. She drives close to a 70/30 city/hwy mix. It steadily increased and seems to have leveled off now that it has 3,000 miles on it. It now averages between 23-24mpg for the same weekly driving. We got almost 30mpg on a 300+ mile road trip :metal:

For comparison, my 00 5.3L A4 3.73 Z71 averages between 13.5-14mpg (almost 100% "City" driving.) If I tow my boat only around 11mpg. I used to average over 15mpg until almost every station around here started running E10 all year. The stations that still have "pure gas" aren't worth the extra effort (20 mins from house) to get to.

Also, if you look closer under the big numbers on the window sticker, under say the "city mileage" it should say something like "Expected range for most driver's 12 to 18 mpg" Chevrolet doesn't rate their vehicles, the EPA does and you'll see the same thing on all cars.

Re: what are you guys getting for mpg?

My 09 GMC CCSB 2wd with a 3.42 is averaging 17.5 right now. I have seen lows of 15.9and highs of 17.9 per tank, but its pretty consistent to see mid 17's.

Re: what are you guys getting for mpg?

I've seen alot of the brand new vehicles not get quite the mileage they r supposed too, but it seems they get better with more miles. I personally think its because the motor is brand new and still pretty "tight". There is a break in period for any new motor. I'm guessing you will see improving mileage as the miles start to add up and everything loosens up. If you are in hilly country you might have been better to go with the 3.42 just to give you more get up and go to get you going up the hills. 3.08 i would think would have to work a little harder to get you up the same hill, meaning your foot is a little deeper in the throttle.

Re: what are you guys getting for mpg?

Those sticker mpg calculations are grossly inflated over real-world driving. Those estimates are basically obtained in a lab under ideal conditions ie. perfect driving (no heavy acceleration), continuous speed, minimal wind/drag, smooth driving surface, no hills, etc. etc. I haven't driven a vehicle yet that met or exceeded it's stated mpg. Notice how they always say "UP TO x mpg" to cover themselves.

Dad just bought a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2WD with the 4.8 and all the HD options, will post some mpg data once he starts keeping track of fuel mileage.

Re: what are you guys getting for mpg?

Well the V6 is no better on mileage....
I just inherited my Uncle's '07 Classic regular cab. It's got the 4.3 V6 & I'm very dissappointed that it is only getting 16mpg. I had an '01 reg cab with 4.8 V8 & it got 20mpg. I can't really complain since the truck was basically free to me, but why would anybody buy a 6 cyl when it is obvious on less power & worse mileage!

grayharville 02-25-2011 06:21 PM

Re: what are you guys getting for mpg?

the 4.3 v6 is the biggest pile of SH** ever to be placed in a fullsize truck. I drove a 2000 Single cab 4x4 with 4.3 for 3 years while saving up for my 2010. Completely underpowered, never ran right, and got 10 mpg. FAIL.
