I plan on changing oil and air filter and just giving it a general going over as far as nut and bolts and electrical components. any advice or insight on old air compressors would be helpful

Do your best to inspect the inside of the tank for rust. Don't want to launch your compressor though the roof. Double check how the motor is wired, 240 v 120. Might put a new belt on the list. Make sure the cut off switch cuts it off.

Excellent find. Kelloggs are beasts. Slow and quiet. I regret selling my last one. A new pressure relief valve is also a good idea.

Yup ... I've got an old 1956 Kellogg compressor in my garage. It has a 1725 RPM motor so it runs at about half the speed of many other compressors that have 3450 RPM motors. Mine has been very reliable and trouble free although I did have to put some new valves in the head about 15 years ago. If I remember correctly, I purchased the head overhaul kit from http://www.aircompeq.com/kakits.html
