Parts store drones

Ever walk into a auto parts store hoping to find the right size and specs for a complicated part and see a teenage girl behind the counter? I usually give a little shudder inside. Nothing against these persons having a job etc. but I will usually wait until the old guy is free. She'll probably end up calling him over anyway.

Or how about calling to look for parts or service and getting a young female voice saying "this is the parts counter". Nothing at all against Ladies in the auto industy, but I think to myself, this is gonna take a while...sigh....

I agree! You usally see those type of people at the $hitty chain autoparts stores such as VIP, autozone, ect. As far as I know NAPA is usally the best place to go they seem to have parts people that actully know somthing about cars! Oh and V.I.P stands for Very Ignorant Pr!cks! LMAO

I'll tell you what though, In Tx, there was a hot chick that knew exactly what I needed every time. I went in saying I needed a fuel pump, she clicked on the puter, I told her for a '70 350 small block, then she said, "oh h*ll, I got them right over here...$9.99."
It was all I could do to keep from asking her to be my wife.

Funny longhornmail, I was just in pepboys the other day (only place open on sunday) looking for header gaskets for a 350. "Headers? 350? theres no such thing." Then I tell him small block chevy. Then I say 5.7 liter. He says that 5.7 liters doesn't sound like a small block to him. Then brings me a gasket but not the one I want or one thats even for a chevy. I was about to come over the counter and choke this moron when a good looking chick comes up grabs the right gaskets refers to the guy as "the rainman" and starts asking me about what that 350 is connected to. To bad she had a ring on!

Longhorn Man 03-23-2002 09:46 PM

Ring don't mean nothin. heh heh heh http://67-72chevytrucks.com/board/ubbhtml/wink.gif

I have always had good luck with O'reilys, They have always given me the right parts the first time. Pepboys is a joke. I personally havent had much luck with NAPA or Carquest either.

Longhorn Man 03-23-2002 10:14 PM

I never cared for O'reilys that much, Advance auto has been my fave for a few years, but here lately, the NAPA has been getting my attention more.

I had a funny experience at Advance Auto Parts once.went in and asked for a TH350 pan gasket, for my 69 C-10.......the guy tells me I don't have a TH350, because they didn't come out until 1974.......WOW, I must have a very rare truck!! http://67-72chevytrucks.com/board/ubbhtml/wink.gif..so needless to say, I had to get parts for "a 74 TH350".LOL

Longhorn Man 03-23-2002 10:20 PM

I could only imagine if I still had the 305 V-6 in the GMC...that would be fun.

I don't really care for the local Checker store , but when all else fails, there's a young lady there that knows her stuff. She's about the only one they employ that does.
I just want to give credit where it's due.

My family owned an auto parts store when I was growing up and I started working there when I was fifteen. When I went to college I worked at an Autozone for a couple of years. After teaching highschool for 3 years I started working for Genuine Parts (NAPA) and worked for a about a year with them. After getting married I worked at Advance for a summer before going back to teaching. I've been around a few Auto Parts Stores and all I can say is that it just depends on the store. You can go into one advance store and you could pull the old top radiator hose for your 74 VW beetle gag and the entire staff would be stumped and you could go into another and get the right parts and right advice. It just matters who is doing the hiring. It's hard to keep good people working in the parts business. It is near impossible to own a store and compete with all of these chains. If you give up and try to work for one of the big chains you are just a # to them. They call you a manager or assistant manager, put you on salary, and then work you 50 to 60 hours a week. The pay stinks and your life does too. Find a good store with good parts people and buy from them. Sorry to ramble on, but I saw the post and include my $0.02. Later guys.

I worked 10 + years at chain parts stores I got tired of being the only one in the store with a clue. I now sell Guns and fishing gear ..the mentality of these stores chased me off.....

I went into the local chain parts store today and asked about some spark plugs. I'm switching over to HEI,told the guy what I was doing. He told me HEI didn't come out on GM products until 1990.This was for my 68. I told him to look up about 75 or later. I then noticed his hat from the local Chrysler dealership. My brother finally talked to the manager who got me what I needed. The Chrysler guy was working part-time.

Or sometimes you get these idiots that "know exactly what they're talking about" and still give you the wrong parts! This one place where I got most of my parts for my old car, did this to me twice! Complete exhaust system, dude swore up and down it was the correct one, NOPE! (ended up bringing the car and exhaust to a shop, as impact wrench was needed, and I had none, or any friends with some, was new to town then) Luckily the auto shop just did a clean swap for the correct exhaust setup. The damn shop did it again to me with new brake pads! Nothing worse than getting your car ripped apart, and then finding out you've been given the wrong parts! (only had single vehicle at the time) So I had to manage to track a buddy down, and give me a lift, and I was late for work after the whole ordeal! Needless to say, I don't get my parts there anymore! Not worth the hassle, or the discount I got there!

To find the person who knows their stuff in autozone etc, go in and ask for a flux capacitor for an '84 Delorean. (Back to the Future) The person laughing prolly knows their stuff. The VW upper hose thing works as well, or a throwout bearing for a th350, muffler bearing,.......

71GMC 4x4 03-24-2002 12:45 PM

I went in to get a upper radiator hose for my dads 85 stepside. This gal was helping me, after getting the wrong one about 3 times, she says,"Well let me get your vin#" I said you got to be kidding. True story!

I just got even with a parts guy. Bought a Edelbrock 1406 today at the store, the only one that was in stock. I heard two people arguing in the back while I was paying for it. Seems like one of the parts guys had stashed the carb away for his own personal use and the manager sold it to me. He was pretty tore up about it, he even tried to tell me it had a deposit on it. The manager wanted him to show the receipt but he couldn't. The customer is always right. Feels good to get some payback once in awhile.

I walked into a big parts store today and needed plugs for our 97 grand caravan. "she" gave me a box of four and 2 more single boxesto total six. I got home to put them in and found out I had three different types of plugs and only two were right. I won't be back there.
