Turn Signal in speedometre - '54 pickup
I have the after market turn signal assembly on a '54 chevy truck. However, it does not connect to the turn signal bulb on the speedometer. The assembly did not seem to have an extra wire to connect to the speedometer and I didnt see how to run it off the flasher unit.
Anyone know how to get the turn signals working in the speedometer? |
Re: Turn Signal in speedometre - '54 pickup
have you got signal bulbs in the gage? got a pic of the back side? if there is bulbs there must be wires coming off for them. if not you may have to drill and install some bulb sockets or use some remote mounted bulbs in the cluster area but not inside the gage? what set up are you using for a signal switch, newer style column with hidden switch or old style column with the signal switch clamped on the outside of the tube? if old style there are some with the indicator bulb in the signal switch. maybe yours has the bulb there?

Re: Turn Signal in speedometre - '54 pickup
If your new speedometer has the bulbs you can connect wires that run from the "front" turn signal leads to the bulbs in the speedometer. You just have to figure out your wiring and figure out how to connect to those wires.
You don't want to connect to the back turn wires as they often have the brake lights running through them and every time you hit the brakes your turn lights would come on in the speedometer. |
Re: Turn Signal in speedometre - '54 pickup
Its the stock speedometer. It has holes for the both the highbeam indicated and turn signal bulbs (one on top and one on bottom). I just dont have any wires coming off the turn signal to put into them. Thanks mr48chev for the info on attaching them to the front turn signal leads. I'll see if I can find a wiring diagram to show how to splice into the aftermarket turn signal switch.
Also, anyone know where I can order the bulb socket from? Thanks again for the help everyone! |
Re: Turn Signal in speedometre - '54 pickup
im not sure mine has turn signal indicators in the speedo....I went looking for it but couldn't find it in my pile of parts...mine doesn't have factory turn signals so I don't know why it would have indicator lights in the speedo.....

Almost positive there are two indicators in the speedometer. High beam and turn signal.

AH the 54 number, that is why the brain F#$&.
If you have the speedometer out now you can go to a Napa or old school parts house and they should have the sockets with short pigtails in stock. The I need sockets to go in these holes with pigtails and bulbs that are __ volt to go in them, should work. It might just be worth taking a ride out to the Filling Station and see what they have or say. I'm not having much luck online but it may be that only the Deluxe cab had the turn signals in 54 and the standard came came without. |

Here is a picture of the back of the speedometer. Not sure if the high beam is on top of the turn signal is supposed to be there.

Re: Turn Signal in speedometre - '54 pickup
The top is hi beam and the other 3 are back lights for the gauges.oil, temperature, amp and fuel.if you had spots for turn signals they would be on either side of high beam indicator.

The oil, temp and amp is on the other gauge. Here is a picture of the front of the speedometer on a '54. The top and bottom are designated for high beam and turn signals as those two each have a colored gel sheet over the light.

Had to find an old picture of my interior and as mentioned, it is the deluxe cab but you can see the upper and lower light holes in the speedometer.
And I got beat to the punch by a better picture anyway... |

On that one with one indicator light you would tie into the output line from the flasher rather than the wires to the lights. When the flasher works it would show on the indicator but won't show left or right.
