"Jack" my 85 c10 lq9 4L80e project
This is my grandpaw's old truck. He bought it new in 85 and I learned to drive in it. I have many old memories with this truck and I can't even begin to tell you what it means to me. My grandpaw "Jack" gave me the truck about a year before he passed. It is the only vehicle that i will never sell. It has had 3 previous engines and must have 400,000 miles or more on it. Jack was even stolen and recovered in Houston Texas!! LOL.
Any way the plans are a slow restore with a LQ9 / 4l80e. It will have a short wheel base bed and maybe a Maggie before I am done. So far I have the following parts: LQ9 4L80e Pypes exhaust system SWB EFI tank and sending unit I still need the following: short wheel base bed or whole truck!!!!! Magna charger headers wheels???? 3" and 5" drop here are some pics snow in Mississippi? http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d1...85c10_0020.jpg in the shop today http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d1...85c10_0033.jpg Deer damage http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d1...85c10_0034.jpg little rough in here http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d1...85c10_0037.jpg the TPI motor was sold and here is the empty bay http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d1...85c10_0039.jpg engine stand mods to keep the AC http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d1...85c10_0040.jpg http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d1...85c10_0044.jpg the engine and tranny. it will be detailed before the final install. http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d1...85c10_0045.jpg The engine is installed and the tranny mount moved. http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d1...85c10_0047.jpg that is where i finished for the day. who is Dennis? i will give credit where it is due. i seen it in fred and seen it called the fred mod.
i am trying a set of dyna tech mustang / lsx swap headers out today or tomorrow. they are 1 7/8" headers!! the hooker lsx swap headers in my 69 camaro look like they may also fit. dyna tech headers on a friends engine http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p...x/DSCF1212.jpg http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p...x/DSCF1213.jpg http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p...x/DSCF1214.jpg http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p...x/DSCF1215.jpg http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p...x/DSCF1216.jpg http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p...x/DSCF1217.jpg |

dynatech headers are awesome. i have them on my 04 f-*** and i love them. i have also been watching for the log style edelbrock intake that i believe is in the picture. will be waiting to see how it turns out.

Re: "Jack" my 85 c10 lq9 4L80e project
 you got it right buddy... the way you did yours is the 'fred' way... i welded a custom bracket that draggin86 made to my x-member rather than moving the engine stand back:D i think he was just giving you a hard time:lol:

Re: "Jack" my 85 c10 lq9 4L80e project
well the mustang dynatech swap headers DO NOT fit. i measured the headers on my ls1 69 camaro and they look like they will fit. i ordered a set today. if they dont fit i will eat the return shipping.
on a different note: the 6.0 looks crooked in the engine bay. the tranny tail shaft seems to be pointed to the drivers side a little. i measured between the frame rails and the tranny output shaft is about 3/4" to the drivers side. i dont know how "centered" the frame rails are so i am not sure about that measurement. anyone have a good measurement point to be sure it is straight in the bay? |
Re: "Jack" my 85 c10 lq9 4L80e project
i'm guessing your cab is still on? there is a line on the TOP of the tranny that i centered mine to... but of course my cab is off. mine was crooked towards the driverside also. i used a bottle jack between the frame rails and moved it over and then tightened the crossmember down. mines still off about an 1/8th inch so i'm going to loosen the motor mounts and stands and then retighten everything and see what happens. hope this helps...

Re: "Jack" my 85 c10 lq9 4L80e project
welli can use the center of the tailshaft to mark the center of the tranny. i am not sure that it should be perfectly centered between the frame rails, that is the issue.
what did you do about your tranny crossmember? i moved mine back and drilled new holes. then i discovered it looked off a bit. |
Re: "Jack" my 85 c10 lq9 4L80e project
i'm thinking it should be centered...
this is te xmember i went with http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...72268975900409 |
Re: "Jack" my 85 c10 lq9 4L80e project

Re: "Jack" my 85 c10 lq9 4L80e project
i finally got a few hours to work on the old truck yesterday.
i got the hooker 69 camaro LS1 swap headers to work. so now i have a nice set of performace headers on the truck. the drivers side fit very nice with minor grinding on the engine side of the clam shell mount. the passender side was hitting the frame stand. i had to trim it a good bit and make about a 1/4" notch in the frame to clear the header tube. all in all they fit pretty well and will clear the transmission cross member. i also got my new (to me) SWB bed. today i plan to remove the LWB bed and do some measuring for a frame cut. i hope to have a SWB truck by tomorrow!!! sorry no pics, the camera died :( i need more $$$ to spen on that |
Re: "Jack" my 85 c10 lq9 4L80e project
S&P 85 C10 LS7 build thread stated that you should leave engine mounts loose until you center transmission. I read it on their site
