3/4 length headers for tucking exhaust?

what's going on fellas! trying to button up the suspension on the 72 and I ran into a little problem and I was hoping that you all would be able to help me out. the truck currently has long tube headers on it right now and they hang well below the frame. would I be able to get away with 3/4 length headers to tuck the exhaust up as high as possible? my big question is, on the drivers side where the shift linkage is, how have you all dealt with this area? I'm only planning to run 2.5" and have it dump right before the rear axle. I have been told that chevelle headers are the way to go, but I'm open for options.

Thanks in Advance fellas,

Barnabie

I don't believe the 3/4 length headers will work with manual linkage. There are full length headers that tuck and clear linkage but I don't know what specific header it is. Hopefully someone who knows can chime in with that info

To Tim's point, the 3 speed shift linkage and the cross shaft for both 3 and 4 speed trucks, you need headers that are designed to clear that. Corvette headers look like they would work. Comparing a set I put O2 bungs in, they look exactly like the Heddman 4x4 headers I used to have on the Jimmy

In order to tuck the exhaust with the auto trans like your 72 has in your signature switch to the Lokar shift linkage, the longer one. 29" I think? Then you can run the Chevelle shorty headers.

I'm planning on running the Corvette manifolds on my 69 with the big block swap and running the exhaust up high. I have cut 4" tube into the crossmember to keep it high all the way out the back.

are you talking about switching to a floor shifter to free up the space?

Sorry, I was thinking clutch linkage. If auto shift linkage is your concern, Mike is saying a Lokar cable shift will solve that problem, if there is one.

Lokar offers a shift linkage for the factory auto column shifter. It gets rid of the bracket on the frame that supports the outside of the factory shift linkage. This frees up the space to run the exhaust through that area.

Big block or small block? I am going to run Chevelle headers on my 402 with a TH400. I asked a question about the linkage a while back and was told the Chevelle headers will clear the stock linkage. The issue will be the auto crossmember because the headers will terminate right in front of the crossmember at the same height. Use a tubular crossmember and it should solve that problem. If small block, I can't help you there.

Im running a small block, but I can fab up a tubular cross member, I hope it can clear the stock stuff. if not, then its time to order the lokar stuff! haha
