Best way to paint 76 stepside box
 

I am getting box ready to paint eventually. Using color with metallic and pearl. So first thought is to paint assembled and no problem with color match. Can use seam sealer where step meets fender and where fender meets box side. But I will be cutting and polishing clearcoat. with fenders and steps in place would be next to impossible to polish and even cutting would be tough where fender meets box side. Want paint on top of fenders, factory paint doesn't cover this area, could prepaint top area and then assemble, but what about clear coat.

So I am planning to have fenders off with steps installed on them. Then still will have polishing problem at that line where they meet. So have to have step separate. what can I do with need to seam seal between panels.

Then just 1 more twist. Customer wants fender bolts (big heads and Philips drive) inside box painted body color like factory. How can I handle this if painted apart. My thought is to paint out side then after finishing cut and polish, reassemble box and mask off and paint inside, ending at outside of rails curve(by top of fenders).

I maybe over thinking this but what does everybody think? Any ideas or suggestions? Can get pictures but it's just a step side box that I want high quality finish on.

my 2cents...paint it all apart..then assemble...no seam sealer...if you feel the need to put something between the metal , you could use 3m strip caulk when you assemble..you could paint the fender bolts separate...or do like your thinking, paint inside the bed after assembly

What about the rear cross sill? Mine was welded in on both sides when I took it apart. I prefer the idea of painting the pieces but was wondering if that small weld was necessary.

Thanks for replies! I looked at the strip caulk and really never had heard about it. Seems like it may have a place for my project. Only available in black but if I could trim it back a bit may not show or disappear as dark door seam??

The rear cross sill is welded in and that will be painted with box sides and front panel. just fenders and front steps separated. I'm thinking. looking for ideas and suggestions. Also how have others managed the areas and sanded and polished the clear coat. Must be a lot of experience out here, how did you do it?
