anyone use foam board for their garage ceiling?

It's the silver aluminum foil coated Styrofoam stuff. I really like the look of it, it has great R-value and it's gotta be easy as heck to install since it weighs like nothing.
Any thoughts?

I have it in my metal on wood frame shop. They put it between the roof stringers and metal. No ceiling, just open trusses. Sure holds heat in, and no condensation. Easy to break until you get it secured.

I don't think so. Printed on the panel, it says it can't be left exposed. Just wondering is this just to deter lawsuits, or really "don't do it"

Id think that it would be a hazard unless its covered in 5/8" sheetrock and taped. That insulation board is big bucks. Be best off to use standard construction & insulation. Id say save the mirrored ceiling for the master bedroom.

I have seen that stuff used on a sheetmetal pole barn in between the metal siding and frame...

its totally illegal to use that as ceiling material.. its insulation and only insulation that needs to be covered by sheetrock. It will burn it will cause fumes and its dangerous if exposed to fire.. Im not even sure if its allowed near electric wire either.. but definately not for a ceiling

On edit its not the ford trucks we find so offensive its the big red FORD sign you got back there that scares us LOL

That's what I did. Dirt cheap too, cost me $100 to buy all of mine for the walls of my 30' x 40' shop, and I have a bunch left over! It's 1-1/2" thick and fits nicely between the girts. Then the sheetrock lays right on top of it in between the 6x6 poles. Great stuff.

I know prices vary but dirt cheap , no kidding where did you get yours for that price ?

I was also looking at this stuff made by Dow. Says it's good for exposure to interior areas.
I've got an older detached garage that I'm tired of being cold in and now want to upgrade with something easy.

A couple strikes against it- Formaldehyde fumes frome the stuff, and the flammability.

We sell this stuff where I work, and after it sits for a few years the edges just seem to evaporate into thin air

Sheetrock is cheap and easy.Heavier than foam,but it sure covers some area for cheap.

yea, but did I mention I'm lazy?

That's a bunch of hard work. Stapling up rolled insulation, renting a drywall jack, a bunch of hours working overhead. Makes me tired just thinking about it.

It's hard to believe that someone doesn't make a all-in-one board that can be installed on garage ceilings. I don't care what it looks like (it's a garage) just something to keep in the heat that won't catch fire.

We can send a man to the moon, but........:lol:

I see people mounting the metal roof on thier ceilings then insulationg either blown or rolled on top... I am thinking of doing that,, ...
