Opinions on buying a police Tahoe?

I know a lot of people abuse the ls engine and they can take it.Are there any differences with the police Tahoe compared to a regular Tahoe other than the appearance? Can I put third row seat in it?I have an 02 Silverado with a lot of miles on it and I love it.Is the 03 to 06 platform just as reliable as my 02?I will probably wait until the end of the summer to purchase one because I know the price vehicles will go up in a few weeks so I have plenty of time to shop around.

I have seen people have good luck with old police cruisers. Too me lots of times it depends on what its life was. If it was a daily patrol vehicle, it might be a bit more worn out than one an officer or specialty folks drove. Yes the 03-06 is reliable as the 02 ear. Most of it is the same. There is differences in the wire harnesses and other electronic connectors (such as radio connector is different between the years). So if you are maybe trying to put an aftermarket radio/stereo from your old truck into the tahoe, you' need some different adapters.

not sure on the tahoes but I had a buddy buy 2 of the chevy caprise cop cars...there is a lot of police only stuff in the cars...he had a heck of a time the title work done...theres something different between civilian titles and gov titles...id check befoe you buy...and because it was a police package he had a hard time getting insurance, and when he did, its a good bit higher than normal..

Thanks for the responses.I found this one it's an 06 just has 120'000 miles on it.Has a towpackage.Does that package have different gearing that will reduce the gas mileage? Still curious if I can get a third row seat in it if it wasn't ordered with one? That's kind of the deal breaker because I really need that third seat. The price is only 6900 so i think it would be hard finding a regular Tahoe that low in miles at that price.

I'm currently living in Oklahoma so I think the laws about the titles are laid back.I see tons of the old retired police crown vics running around.

Re: Opinions on buying a police Tahoe?

A couple years ago I bought a 2005 Tahoe Police interceptor for $1500. It had just shy of 200,000 miles. Had a transmission code and shifted hard. The engine rattled a little bit. But no joke, even a beat up one like that would do a standing zero to 60 is just under 7 seconds and will pull 130mph. Very impressive for a stock 5.3 and basically stock 4l60e. Basically the difference is the speedo goes to 140. No governor. Steel rims. Skid plate. Just things like that. I sold mine for $1300 not long after. So be careful. I was hoping for a donar rig but with all the little issues it wasnt worth it. But the one I owned for a short period of time had a hard life. So be careful and really ask yourself why you want it.

True GM police pkgs also tend to have high amp Alts for the electronics, HD Cooling and Brakes, Lock Diff, HD Suspension, skid plates to name a few. Just google it and you will see everything.

You should check the rear floor for the mounting points,I am not familiar with these vehicles, but maybe the mounting points may be under the carpet?
