Towing Capacity?

Got a question for folks who pull travel trailers!

My '89 S-10 long bed has 1625 lb payload and the hitch is rated at 1750 lb max. Even small travel trailers are generally over 2000 pounds gross weight. Anybody know if the 1750 lb towing limit is absolute? For instance, is a 2000-2400 lb trailer with electric brakes too heavy?

If the S-10 is out of the running...

What's the towing capacity of a '76 C10 half ton? Mine had a 350 and a camper on it at one time. Campers are pretty heavy! It currently has a 305/T350 and no camper. I've pulled a car dolly with a 2400 lb car on it. Worked pretty well even with the performance radials. Not sure how long the trans and rear end will hold out though.

I've pulled alot of weight with my lil s10. Wouldn't want to do it over a long distance , just because the trucks really weren't built for that. What motor and trans do you have? the 4.3 and 700r4s are what are in some full size trucks. If you have that, I probably wouldn't be scared to tow a 2000lb trailer.

I should say, I have towed a 18"car trailer with a fwd Oldsmobile on it, with an Astro van. Towed it no problem. 4.3 700 trans. 65- 70 on the flat interstate.

I have the 4.3 with 4L60 4-spd auto. I'm confident that it will haul well within the designated limits. The ride/handling are very good. Would be nice to be able to lock the rear end on demand for better traction. Still wondering why throttle is so touchy from idle/standstill (worse when cold). Couple days ago it clunked when I threw it into reverse, sounds like a u-joint, but runs smooth and silent, need to check them.

Make sure you don't use your overdrive when you towing
