1991 Suburban V2500, Need new tires, considering change in tire size

I have usually run 195 R85 16 Load Range E, but ran with some used 235 tires and liked the change. It turns out the factory recommended size per tire rack is 235-85/16 load range E, so I am thinking I should follow the factory guidelines. My speedometer may not have been reading accurately with the alternate size.

Comments?

Thanks

I have never heard or seen of anyone running a 3/4ton anything with 195 width tires. That's absolutely amazing.

Maybe the Colorado snow has something to do with it

Well, I decided to go with the Michelin 235 R16 tires, and the Costco manager said the installers
enjoyed working on my Suburban (it's a 1991, last year of the box style and first year with a 4 speed transmission).

The ride home was smoother than I can remember!

Also put new Bridgestone tires on a Volvo V70XC, just in time for snow today.
The old ones were from a junkyard and were starting to rumble as I was driving.

Thanks for the comments; I committed before getting a chance to read them!

I'm glad to see you went back to the proper tire size and are happy with the results. I didn't even know such a small 16" light truck tire size existed, as the 195/85-16. 235/85-16 is the closest metric equivalent to the long time standard bias-ply size for 3/4t-1t trucks, 7.50-16.

In the future, if you have other questions or need info on your V2500 Suburban, you'd be better off posting in the 73-87 message board since most everything about the 88-91 R/V series are carryovers from the '87s

Me neither, but it probably replaces a 6.00 or 6.50-16 that used to be on a lot of half ton pickups and jeeps. All of those are more like a xxx/95 but I never saw a metric tire with that profile.

Funny that what they call "narrow tires" these days were "wide tires" 50 years ago.

Yeah, I'd consider this an OOBS aka 73-87 [and 91 for blazers, HD's and burbs]

Just recently put 285s on my 91, but I have a small lift and I went with 4.56 gearing

They are meaty tires, the ride is much smoother than I can remember!
