A quick back story on this truck. This truck was given to me for my High School graduation present back in 2004 from my father. It was titled as a 1970 C10 short bed, not much else was known about this truck. At the time of when I got it, it had a crate 350 mated to a th350. It ran but didn't move. Needless to say it needed some work (I will upload some pics of the original state when I can I find them.)
Knowing that, it didn't take long before I started tearing into it. As an eager 17 year old it didn't take long before we had it stripped down, to the frame and cab. This wasn't a full restore at the time, we just replaced what needed to be replaced.
Fast forward a few years and you now see what I have here.

In 2009 my Father lost a battle with Lymphoma Non-Hodgkins. So now this truck means more to me than many people can ever understand, well unless you are another gear head who had a father who had taught you everything you know, and some. The "and some" are the talents you posses despite never receiving instruction by anyone. It was what is instilled in you.

This truck has already been broken down all the way to the frame 13 July, 2013. The time I have allotted myself for this rebuild is 2 years. Think I will achieve it?

Bare with me as I tear apart this truck, keep a clean workable 2 car garage, and keep you posted.

Looks like a great start to another 70 project (my favorite year). Sorry about your pop. I can relate, lost my dad in 2003. He taught me a lot about wrenching too. Subscribed....

Nice truck and I'm subscribed. I went through chemo in 2008 for lymphoma non hodgkins and I'm so sorry for your loss.

Wow I would be happy to have a truck that nice after I am done with mine.
You are tearing that really nice truck apart and rebuilding it again?

If mine was near that nice I would still be driving it instead of waiting for it to come home from bodyshop jail. Mine will look much like that hopefully .

Fortunately that's what should make this rebuild quite easy. Aside from replacing what needed to be replaced, I was fortunate enough that my dad went and got the full 4/6 drop kit from ECE. I bought the trail reinforcement kit and 1 1/4" front sway bar, as well a Stainless Steel bed mounted gas tank. So as for the chassis and suspension, it's pretty straight forward. Break down, clean up, sand blast, powder coat, and reinstall.

Here are some pics from our (three friends and me) tear down process.

Enclosed: Reading left to right, top to bottom. Pictures are a mixture between the 13th and the 16th of this month.
1. Me taking an inner fender off.
2. Same thing, different view as well as a view of Pikes Peak.
3. Rear mounted gas tank. In the background is a metal wall mounted shelving unit I built just for this tear down.
4. Cab finally off, was not an easy task with 4 guys and a fully loaded interior. Had to resort to taking the doors off.
5. The body dolly I built. I made it a bolt together so that when I don't need it, I can break it down and stow it.

For this rebuild the tools that I own are as follows:
80 Gallon Air compressor (Craftsman)
1/2 impact gun (Aircat, I highly recommend them)
Angled Die grinder (Aircat, this thing is unbelievably quite)
Straight Die Grinder (Campell Hausfeld)
Lincoln Weldpak 3200 HD (from Home Depot almost 10 years ago)
Milwaukee Sawzall
Dewalt Angle Grinder
Milwaukee Corded Drill
Ridgid Cordless Drill
Air hammer (Craftsman)

Looks like a great start. How do you like the seats you have? Looks like they are from discountvanandtruck, I have pondered the idea of getting a set from them.

The overall goal I guess the better way I could put it, is I am looking to restore this truck to a condition where it will be very dependable, user friendly, and I would like to compete in some car shows, and maybe try it out on a road course, to see if my talent paid off.

It has crossed my mind, but I did not include it in my "budget." However, I am building it, particularly the cab, with a Vintage Air in mind. So I am filling the holes of the factory AC. If it does not bite me in the ass later on, I would like to install it later. So in my mind all I would need to do is plumb it, mount the bulkhead, mount the system inside, and wire it all together. That's the plan, we will see if it bites me in the ass later. Or maybe I will just say screw it, and go ahead and buy the system.

More pictures

First one is of some shelves I built for the build and just some work space for when i need to work on something. They are collapsable, so when I don't need them, they lay flat against the wall and stick out 2.5" from the wall.

Second one is how I have stored the body panels, up against the wall on side, while I use the otherside to work on the chassis

The third and forth just show the progress I made through out the day.

All this was the 17th of July.

22nd of July.

The first two pictures are of the welding and grinding I did on the front to fill the holes that were never used. Basically just smoothing the frame. The first picture isn't doing much justice, definitely a Rook was operating the camera.

The third picture is just a bead I placed on the last non-removable crossmember. All Non-removable cross members are welded to the frame rails as to try and reduce any frame flex.

Why not box and cross brace the frame?

Hmmmm.....

And the last picture is just how the frame stayed before I called it a night.

Order of business for Tuesday was to remove the mid cross member. It is being replaced by an ECE Extreme Drop Crossmember. Needless to say it was a bit of a pain in the ass. Next on the list was finish up on the bump stops. All bump stops are being welded and grounded down smooth. The Bump stops that I will be using will require a hole to drill and they will be mounted via stud.

Yeah I believe the seats are from that site, or something to similar to that site. I got these seats back in 2008 or earlier. So I don't quite remember. They are not bad, however, in these cabs there is not much room for them. Fortunately for me, I am short, as these things don't leave much for leg room. The bracket that came with, has the seats sitting flat if not a slight tilt forward, it's a little weird, but I got used to it.

After a long day, here are some pics. What's shown are just some plain pics of what is going to the powder coater. Everything in the first four pictures are going to be black. Everything in the last picture is going to be silver. I threw in the jack stands just for the hell of it. Those jack stands were my Dads and have been around for awhile. So I thought they could use a refresh.

In addition to the boxing, I went ahead and welded up the extra holes that are no longer needed with using the Extreme Drop Crossmember. Here are some pics of the finished product, and finally the whole frame. It was a bit time consuming, but I think it will pay off in the end. Now off to the powder coater... in 4 hours.

As busy and hectic this week has been, it will well worth it for when I get all the parts back ready to install in 2 weeks. Fortunately during the 2 weeks they are getting powdered, I will be busy with work. So time will fly.

So here is the view from this morning, right before I took off to the Powder Coater, and the view when I returned home. Looking in the garage not seeing a frame and other parts, is kind of a relief. Just knowing that everything is off getting cleaned and a new coat of paint.
Now waiting two weeks for when I get everything back, time to relax. Unfortunately I don't like a messy garage, so the next order of business is getting everything cleaned and organized.

This is to all who has subscribed, given me compliments on the truck, and gave me their condolences for the loss of my father. I appreciate it all. I hope to doc. as much as possible on this thread, and maybe spark some other rebuilds out there. Reading and going through these Projects and Builds is what inspired me to be here.
