which steel wool to clean chrome bumpers?

i've been trying to figure out which grade of steel wool is best to remove light surface rust from the chrome bumpers on my '66 C-10...do I need Fine "0", Very fine "00", Extra fine "000", or Super fine "0000"?

also, where's the best place to find it?

thanks for any help

nothing more course than 0000 IMO if light rust. it even is ok on plastic plated if done gently.
Anywhere they sell it is ok. Now if you want the oilfree wool like some woodworkers its a little harder to find. We just go to a hardware store

you can spray the crap out of them a few times with WD40 before doing anyscrubbing. if you need to use steelwool use the fineest grade you can find// i'll spray them with the wd40 pbblaster or if i have it GIBBSoil and just use mothers metal polish cut with the spray cleans up things pretty good

Re: which steel wool to clean chrome bumpers?

Use a product called "Naval Jel" to remove the rust without scratching the metal coating in the chrome.

:agree: with Frank, naval jelly is the way to go.

I did however use 4-ott, 0000, steel wool recently on a project and it worked perfectly and didn't gouge or scratch the metal.

I have always used 4ot on rusty chrome...works perfect.

I don't think you can scratch chrome with any mild steel wool. Stainless steel wool however......?. Be careful with naval jelly as it's an acid and will etch steel and is used to 'frost' steel gun parts

here at work we use 0000 fine grade with metal polish or glass polish for windows (removes water spotting on windows)

www.metalwax.com

I guess if you don't know how to do it you should not. Think about it. We do it all the time when needed and without scratching it. just have to have lubricant and a soft touch.

its plastic rust:lol: We have taken over spray off grilles at times and you can't even tell it was done with 5 steel wool. Not saying it should be used to regularly clean chrome.

Some of the new mirrors are plastic. I have used razor plades to get water spots off before on glass so I thought it would work on my side mirrors. Bad decission. Had to replace it.

Yeah this is what I use on chrome. I'm always happy with the results.

Did you guys know that this product and Never Dull are from the same company? I have used this stuff on my aluminum wheels and it is very good stuff.

This stuff is about the same color as cotton candy. Comes in a rope like never Dull.

Re: which steel wool to clean chrome bumpers?

Yeah we have used never dull stuff for over 25 years

When i managed a detail shop, we used to do that. Have to be carefull because you can put fine scuffs in the glass that you can see at certain angles.
