I knew about it when we bought the house, but...

It was one of a couple issues I chose to turn a blind eye to when we were buying the house. The back deck is at ground level with the driveway. The former owner really had little clue how to build things properly. The deck is there and salvageable for now. If money were not the issue I'd tear it down, build a foundation wall, put drain tube in it an back fill it with drainage rock. Then put a deck over it. The deck is built on a steep slope. The ground is sandy dirt. Problem (main one) is the footings were only cut into the hillside and not below grade. Of course since the deck was build all the vegetation that supported the slope are gone now. Factor in a large paved surface above and water you get a lot of erosion. I'm repairing the worst first. That is the two supports that were hanging in the air. I am pouring two form tubes as far below grade as I can dig. Id like to go much deeper, but its a band-aid repair to get me by.I know that the new footings will settle until it dries and gets compacted. I decided to use adjustable pier saddles so I can adjust them as needed. Once the deck is resting on the new piers I am going to cover the slope in visqueen to keep it moslty dry. I'd rather clean up my own mistakes. At least they make more sense to me.

I am removing some decking from above and will make a chute to pour the new cement through.

That looks like alot of fun ! :metal: I learned one thing when I worked with a Gen. Contractor, anytime you break, or pour cement, you must drink beer after you jackhammer or finish your mud !
Looks like you got plenty of cement and beer in your future
