New Pole Shed Nebraska

Hello, I have been watching some other shop threads here and am about to start getting our new pole shed erected.
We have been planning this for about a year, but first we had to get rid of this.

Our old garage was 20x20 and was built for little cars like model T's.
We also had to relocate our overhead power lines, and contract to have underground lines installed to our House, existing shop, and the new shop.
So in order to lose the garage I had our local Volunteer Fire Dept. burn it down for a training day.

I had already removed a 3rd stall lean to addition and had to make a plywood door so the FD could close up the building for training. They marked the A side and attacked the fire thru the steel garage door at one point.

One of our new guys was hosing down the propane tank to keep it cool.

After the garage was gone I dug up a lot of concrete and cleaned up the site getting ready for dirt work.
I live in a rural area that is flat farmland between 2 major rivers. So according to the Feds I am in the flood plain. We built our old shop in 1992, it is 48x68x12' high. Half of it is finished into a wood shop, the other half is shop space. When we built that shop there were no height regs. for the flood plain rules. Things have changed since then. We now have to have a survey done to determine our average elevation of our lot. then go 3' above that average to determine the floor height top of concrete. Even though our house has never flooded.
This is the result.

55 dump trucks of fill clay, plus about 20 dump trucks of black dirt the county was digging out of the ditches a couple of miles from my house. My dirt contractor used a rubber tire loader, a skid steer, and a compactor for a week on and off to get it built up
The new shop will be 48x60x16.5' high, it will have 2 overhead doors on the left half. The right half will be an entertainment space/man cave. So I will build a partition wall inside at 30'. We are planning a loft in the finished half.

Looking good on getting started. Thats a lot of dirt to get the floor up. How does that affect the depth the poles have to be put in the ground.

They plan a 48" deep hole with a concrete footer at the bottom, then pack limestone gravel around the pole. The contractor has no issue with the fill since it was mechanically compacted. We also built up enough so they can drive a man lift all around the building,
There is at least 8' all around the footprint.

Sounds like a good plan.

Contractors got started yesterday. Mainly staked out everything marked where poles will go and assembled poles. They dug the post holes last thing.

This morning they had the holes inspected and dropped in the footers, which are plastic now! Started dropping poles in the holes! Been cold the last 3-4 days here, they are keeping a burning barrel going to keep warm.

The crew has been making progress slowly, cold and windy here lately.

This pic is from our upstairs window, shows how tall the shed is. I believe the roof ridge will be as high as our 2 story house roof!

They should start framing in doors and windows after the Holiday.

This morning we have new snow drifts I need to go out and clear.

Looks good. Is that a scissor-type truss; maybe it’s just the picture but looks like it’s bellied for extra height?

Re: New Pole Shed Nebraska

Yes, should give me about 18' to the center of the truss from the concrete. I am going to put a loft in the finished part on the right/East.
As for now we will be happy to get the building enclosed and start parking in the west half, don't know if we will be able to get concrete poured till spring.

Yeah it’s not the best time to be working on it. Mine has flatlined the last few weeks. Doors are still back ordered.

I love these garage threads. I’m sure it will help with future builds. When mines done I’m going to post all the things I wished I did or wished I did differently.

Re: New Pole Shed Nebraska

So for Christmas my son made a sign for the new shop.
He works at a large diesel shop and cut this out on their CNC plasma table, out of maybe 1/8" steel.
He then aged the steel with acid wash, and mounted it on a piece of wood we salvaged out of the old garage that was burned down.
It was a nice gift that will look cool in there.

The building crew has still been dealing with weather here. They did get windows and entry doors installed, and started on the front soffits.
