Timing dilemea...

Ok...its not a true dilemea...but I have way too much total vacuum...I have an adjustable vacuum can, and a proform HEI..the mechanical advance is 25 degrees in at 2700rpm..with the vac. im up to 65 degrees at 3000...thats with intial set at 8 degrees
Thats after I adjusted down the vacuum can..it was 80 degrees total timing...WTF..my 283 has pretty low comp. so it dose not ping..but im getting ready to put in a 10.2 to 1 355...so im trying to figure it out
thanks
jim

Go for a crane vac advance can,& limit the vac advance to about 10 degrees(approx .110 pull on the rod). I did mine by tack welding a small strip of sheet metal on the bracket. You can then run your initial 14-16 up,& total @ 34-36 with the can unhooked & plugged.I would plug the can to full man vac, then you should pull about 44 degrees under light throttle cruise. No fear, when you drop the loud peddle, you will be running on initial & mechanical advance only. For a street curve, try to use the springs that will give An "all in" @ 2800-3000 rpms on the mechanical advance. Good luck.....69 longhorn.
