1970 GMC Jimmy purchase

I bought this a while back and thought I’d share. I really didn’t have the money, not sure what I’m going to do with it but it felt like a good deal so I pulled the trigger. Original 350 motor, some Hickey stuff and fairly original. Rocker panels are rusted but otherwise pretty solid. Drives and stops good enough to cruse around town. The truck was passed down by the father but the family decided it was time to let it go. Power steering, power brakes and uncut AC dash. A delivery truck backed into it and crunched the fender and grill. Paint looks to be original.

Nice buy. Too bad about the fender and grille.

It looks like the original owner was pretty big on maintenance, too.

Yeah too bad about the front end damage but looks like a good solid survivor. Interesting that the battery is on the left (driver) side of the engine bay. Mine is on the right side in my ‘71.

Nice glad you got it that's a pretty cool truck! Better pics than what was on Offer-up.

Are those the extreme bend hooks on the front that I keep hearing about?

Re: 1970 GMC Jimmy purchase

No those are hooks attached to the hickey push bar.

Re: 1970 GMC Jimmy purchase

After three years I finally made some progress. My mechanical skills are not good so I tackled the easier stuff and had a shop help with the things I couldn't / didn't want to do. The tranny and transfer case were rebuilt. That took forever! They said it was hard to source parts but it could have just been the shop. The engine was totally resealed, HEI was added, the cooling system was redone, and the brakes were gone through. I did as much as I could on the interior and replaced the front fender, grill and bumper. For what it is, I am really happy with it. Zero body work or rust repair. I'll post a few pictures of the progress for anyone that is interested. Still need to do the exhaust and hook up the AC.

Overall, that thing is in great shape. Nice find and a keeper of a rig.

I took apart the seats so I could clean and repaint the brackets

Removal of the fender, grill, bumper and winch stuff. The bumper was tough to get off because of the damage and the additional hardware from the winch. The core support was bent but I chose not to remove that

Top off and pictures of rust. The roll bar was under pressure and when the bolts were removed it shot out and hit the side of the bed. I had to strap it inward just to remove it.

Took the console apart to clean and path the holes. I used the stuff called Steel Stik to path the holes. I also used that stuff on minor rust holes so there wasn't shape metal to get hooked on.

Don't laugh but I used that stuff to patch the drip edge. Here is the console after I put it back together.
