Are New NOS GM door handles "defects/seconds"?
I see a lot of new GM NOS outside door handles showing up for sale all over the internet. Are they rejects? Defects? Seconds?
I bought a pair (not from this board) and both were bad! The buttons were tight/stuck and would not move all the way out without binding. One just blew the spring & parts all over the desk. It looks like the inside plates were riveted off center---binding on one side and a big gap on the other. Where did all of these come from? Why are they released now? Anyone else seeing these or other problems? I recommend if you just bought some, open the boxes and inspect them. Also, if you are buying, ask the seller to open the boxes and check them closely BEFORE shipping. |

Mine seem to be fine. I agree that it is odd that so many showed up all of a sudden. The dates on mine are 98 and 02 if that makes any difference.

I had to buy 2 sets to make one nice set...

Re: Are New NOS GM door handles "defects/seconds"?
I have three and they all function fine but the chrome isn't what I'd call show quality....it's not bad, but not perfect (trash/pitting under the chrome (not rust) I sold another pair a while back and the same can be said of the chrome on my NOS mirrors. Some of the NOS mirrors are from the 70's and some mfr'd in the early 90's and they look the same to me as far as chrome which was surprising...
It is interesting so many came for sale at once...but might just be coincidence or someone finding a stash of 50 or so pair they sold online and several of our savvy members picked up??? :) I don't know...just a theory. Or, it could just be that spring is the best time to sell parts as people are wanting to work on their projects and lots of guys need cash for their own projects so they're clearing out old inventory... |
Re: Are New NOS GM door handles "defects/seconds"?
Or maybe some of our KC friends can let us in on how they came about all these NOS handles??

Re: Are New NOS GM door handles "defects/seconds"?
Are there bar codes on the boxes? There are no bar codes on original parts from this era. GM started selling repro parts made by the same companies in a foreign land as any other vendor when they started GM Restoration Parts 20 or more years ago. These parts are in GM boxes but are by no means N.O.S.,or OEM for that matter.

I had also heard that some parts were re-boxed at a later date to update the boxes or add the bar code. No idea if that is true. Up until a few years ago you could still get cheyenne-10 emblems from GM. What would those be? If they are gone now where would the restoration parts start? |

NOS dates will be from 67-72 |
Re: Are New NOS GM door handles "defects/seconds"?
The guy that sold me these (EBAY) said he has sold 30 pr and has 75 pr left...no reported problems. Yet, both of the ones he sold me were really bad and would not work at all!
I don't mind GM selling retooled or newly made parts IF they meet original specs. |

Re: Are New NOS GM door handles "defects/seconds"?
Agreed that NOS != Original GM. NOS is going to be a part that was made during the production run, or arguably with the same tooling shortly thereafter. After that you will find "Original GM" stuff made by GM at some point after, as a replacement part, and unless it was really a decorative cosmetic item (which door handles should be) even a GM part only has to "function as original".
Some people/vendors use NOS to mean so many things, sometimes out of ignorance and sometimes deceptively, but as far as I'm concerned a door handle made in 1998 or 2002 isn't NOS. That said, the quality of some of the reproduction stuff I've ordered recently is so poor in quality or appearance that I'm getting pretty bummed about the aftermarket. And its not specific to any one vendor. I wish they'd honestly rate them on a two-axis function/appearance scale so I knew up front what I was buying. As it is I've stuck to buying from vendors with flexible return policies, because a box of parts is becoming like a box of chocolates... |
Re: Are New NOS GM door handles "defects/seconds"?
New Old Stock is just that IMO old parts that have never been used. Not parts made 10 years ago. You have to be careful I have seen a lot of stuff sold a NOS when in fact it's new GM but not old new GM, make sense?

Re: Are New NOS GM door handles "defects/seconds"?
I asked the NOS question a while ago and the consensus at that point was that NOS is any discontinued GM made part. I have made the mistake of selling some parts as NOS not knowing they were still being produced. Like the deluxe sidemarkers that were still produced until the last couple years. Now they are discontinued and I consider them NOS now since they are New parts but Old Stock (not being made today)

Re: Are New NOS GM door handles "defects/seconds"?
Guess it's just a matter of what you expect for NOS. Me I want 40 year parts that were never installed. To me that's where the value is, someone had to store them for 40 years without using them worth a little more money for that alone.

I've been wondering this as well. "NOS" with a barcode on the box doesn't seem right at all. |
Re: Are New NOS GM door handles "defects/seconds"?
I've got a pass side door handle in a older box with a barcode on it
