69 Camaro Gas Tank Install

I have been wanting to install a behind the license plate tank since I bought my truck. I took this as an opportunity to help anyone else who may want to go this route.

Mods - If this need to go someplace else - no problem with me.

Here goes.......

I bought a 69 Camaro gas tank(18 Gallon), sending unit, straps and anti, squeak kit from a company off of E-bay by ther name of Tamraz for 194.00 shipped. Don't order off ebay, just call the company tell them about the forum and this install and they "may" cut you a deal. Don' bother with the 69 Camaro gas tank straps. It's easier to fabricate your own than use theirs. See if they will swap out the straps for the anti-squeak kit.

Their # is 1800-442-4601

Here is a list of other items needed:

Flip down license plate holder - 10.00 U-pull
6 ft metal tubing 2"x3" and 8' of 1"x 1/8 strapping - $30 at steel distibutor
10' 3/8 tubing, 4' rubber fuel line, locking gas cap, union for tubing - 32.00 @ Autozone
Misc hardware to mount tank to frame and fuel line - $10 at hardware store

Total about 276.00

I started by mocking up the tank to the frame to see how much of a spacer I would need with my bumper

Once I got the right height I took off the license plate bracket and cut out a square with the cut off wheel, drilled a couple of holes in the bracket and mounted the flip down holder.

I cut the 2x3 square, drilled the holes and mounted it to the frame. After that I cut the 1x1/8 and bent them into the shape of the tank, drilled holes and did a test fit.

Put everything in place and slid the anti squeak pieces in, tightened it all down.

Took out the old tank and fuel lines and pre-bent the new lines to match the old one.

Then installed the front portion using the old clips. Installed the back portion with some new clips and hoses.

I still need to hang the exhaust so that it doesn't hit the tank and smooth the old gas neck hole but that will be another day.

Here is the finished product.

I have to say thanks to Bad70sbchevy, without his pics and info none of this would have gotten done. This is truly his build I just detailed it a bit more.

I took a bunch more pics and they are in my gallery if you want to check them out.

A whole lot of '60s to mid '70s GM cars were like that.

Thats sweet; I grew up with a '79 TA in the family and thought that was the coolest thing at the gas pump. I have another idea to add to the list :). Any concern with ground clearance it looks kinda low. What is the ride height of your truck? Thanks.

I have a 4 inch drop in the back. Doesn't sit any lower than the pumkin.

No leaks!

Nice build and info, guys. Any reason this wouldn't work on a stepside?

Mine is a stepside. Works fine.

Any tank would have to fit between the rails for it to work with a hitch.

Here are a couple of pics with the bed bolted in. No clearance issues.

The only thing I might do different is the license plate door. It looks like you have the spring loaded one that when you let go would pop back up. Some models have a break-over point so that once opened they stay in that position until you nudge them back closed. I forget the exact model of car but I pulled a couple on my last junk yard trip. Might make filling up a little easier for you.

If I remember right they were from a mid to late 80s Caprice, Pontiac Parisienne, Olds Delta 88, etc. I am positive they were from GM sedans at very least. Here are some pics. Notice how the hinge breaks over and stays in place. They could be mounted up or down. I plan to use mine for hidden hitch purposes. Incidentally, these pics are of the backside, the license plate side is face down.

I had a '90 Cadillac Fleetwood brougham, the fullsize caddy. it had the flip down plate holder that held itself down. They made those cars til '92.

Ok Guys. I went to the yard today and picked up a new license plate holder. It came off a 92 Caprice (old cop car). Works awesome. Thanks for the heads up on this one. Here are some pics and a shot of the tank from up my driveway and from the side.

This looks like an awsome mod, can you show more detail on how you fabed up the straps?

67Slider 02-12-2011 09:22 PM

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install

The straps were the hardest part for me. I just laid the tank down and made bends in the strapping until they were right. Took a bit of trial and error but turned out good. Once I got the bends right I shot a coat of paint on them. No worries.
