5.3 LS oil pan clearance

The factory LM7 - 5.3 LS oil pan fits into my 69 c10 by a good ways with Dirty Dingo Slider engine mounts. There is probably 5 inches between the pan and the cross-member. (pics will come once the engine is mounted in the truck)

Re: 5.3 LS oil pan clearance

Yes the pan will fit the chassis. The extended part of the truck pan, that part that is below the cross-member, is just too low for a lowered truck. It is a couple inches below the factory cross-member.

If you plan on lowering your truck I can't recommend the factory truck pan. Stock or higher I don't see an issue with it.
Cheers

Here are all the various pan dimensions. You might be able to use a factory pan if you do some measuring.

That's a cool resource. Kind of strange they didn't include the Gen 3 truck oil pan though (2006 and older) since it's so common on swaps.

I agree it is a missed addition to the cool site with references.

The early truck depth is 9"
The gm retro fit pan is 7.750

That doesn't look too bad.

Just remember LS pans don't dent they break if you hit something really solid.

And the bottom of that pan looks to be in the perfect location to get smacked if you go over a large speed bump or something to that effect.

For reference, here is the clearance with the 302-1retro fit pan. Keep in mind, this is also with a 3/4" pancaked crossmember, so the pan would be even more protected with a stock crossmember. I went with the 302-1 because it gave me almost 2 more inches between the crossmember and vertical face of the sump area compared to the 302-2. The consequence is that the 302-1 is about 1/2" deeper, but that turned out to be a safe compromise.

Thanks Mr3Speed and hewittca for the pictures. I've got a 302-1 on order.

Great pics and will also be ordering this pan. Would you mind sharing if anything else is needed. Does the factory dip stick tube get used. I’m going to be attempting my first 5.3 swap into my 72 suburban. Thanks much

On my LS1 swaps with LS1 coil covers I use the Lokar oil dip stick. I find the truck and Camaro stock dip stick too long and kind of in your face.
I think Trans Dapt has a less expensive version of the Lokar.

I don't know if the factory dip stick works. I was under the impression that it did not so I ordered what was supposed to be the correct one for this pan, which happens to be from a Camaro. It's PN 12625031 tube and 12669528 stick. It looks fine for my build, but it does stick up quite a bit if you're trying to do something cleaner than my truck. Other than that it was a straightforward swap. I would definitely add the second mounting bolt on the oil pickup tube. Stock only has one but there is a treaded hole for a second and the tube that comes with the kit has a hole to let you utilize it.

Here's the Dorman part numbers for the GM Part Numbers above.

DORMAN 921-045
DORMAN 921-044

When I did mine I think the Dorman were slightly cheaper...
