stopped for exhaust

I keep getting pulled over for my exhaust being too loud even though the local DMV approved my exhaust and says it's passing. Any one out there have similar problems?

mikep 03-10-2003 01:48 AM

Buy new exhaust. You can argue with cops all day about the DMV approving stuff but they WILL "find" something to write a ticket on if they can't find anything else. Arguing with cops is a losing battle.

yep, there's nothin like bringing attention to yourself REV IT UP THE NEXT TIME that will really piss em off

CHP gave my kid a ticket for Loud and mod Exhaust. I looked the section up and it said 95 dba was max but you could not mod. Got the info in the mail, Love this, It said " Send $85 w/o proof of correction or $10 with proof of correction". I had a freind at the muffler shop write me a reciept and sent them $10.

mtdave2 03-10-2003 11:48 AM

just fix it and save the trouble

Reumster 03-10-2003 11:52 AM

I got pulled over the same day I had my new exhaust put on! So I just went home and put my silensers in LOL. Benifit of having bomb SS mufflers.

krazy_texan 03-10-2003 12:33 PM

i havent been pulled over yet but i might when i put my new exhaust on

yodaman43l 03-10-2003 03:27 PM

Do the cops carry DB meters in their cars? Here they have to verify your exhaust is over the legal limit or it wont even make it past a call to the county attourneys office. They have to have a "certified" meter reader come and take a measurement, which from what I hear, is the captain.??? So I say let em have it if you are legal!!

I've only been oulled over one time for excesive noise. Or what the local cop called excesive noise. He told me to never pull that $hit in his town again. Oddly enough the next night when we were up town shooting the bull, we here someone really getting on it. Turned around and guess who, the same cop in his personal truck. Pretty poor on his part.
The way I see it if the cops are going to enforce noise violations on pipes, they need to start handing out tickets to people with load bass. My windows never shake when trucks drive by, just these kids with loud music. Am I alone on this one?
Oh well just venting I guess. Until next time keep the pedal to the metal:burnout:

The two loudest cars I ever had were (1) my '60 Triumph TR-3, which only had a '66 Pontiac resonator for a muffler; and (2) my '71 VW, with EMPI Extractor. Cops didn't like the VW/EMPI. It was genuinely loud. I had to replace the extractor with a bogus extractor that didn't match the collector on the headers. As soon as I satisfied the cops, I put the old extractor on and drove it for another 18 months. I got the ticket in the VW when I'd only had it (from new) for 5 months.

My '69 runs 40's with outlets at the rear tires. It is loud, but not so loud that it bothers anyone that I know....except my neighbors when I fired it up at 6am. That's why houses have A/C and central heat....so you can keep the windows CLOSED!

Yeah, I have a problem with the thumpers, too. One of these days, when they are older, they're gonna be hard of hearing, or deaf, due to the excessive noise from their sound systems. Systems that are loud, and cause the vehicle to buzz and vibrate, aren't good systems, just loud systems. You have to have class, and be a discrimate audiophile, to have a good, loud, system. Knowing when to turn it down, is like knowing when you can speed. Respect is the key.

Get this one. I got pulled over with my 98 GMC that has a cat back with glass packs behind the cat's. They gave me a ticket for $100. I read the state laws and it said that no exhaust can be modified to be louder than it came from the factory.

I argued the ticket and they said what they would do is have the mechanic buddy of the judge give his "opinion" on if my truck was louder than it came from the factory or not and that would be the decision of the court.

Really pissed me off because my truck is not very loud and is much quiter than the 8000 bikes running around here. (not that i have a problem with bikes i like a good rumbling harley)

By there definition you could never replace a muffler with anything but a GM replacement.

gmc67swb 03-10-2003 09:54 PM

I'VE NEVER BEEN PULLED OVER FOR LOUD EXHAUST. I'M RUNNING 2 1/2 FLOWMASTER 2 CHAMBERS. IT STOPS ABOUT A FOOT SHORT OF THE REAR AXLE. IT DOESN'T TURN DOWN OR OUT.

krazy_texan 03-11-2003 01:35 AM

well talking about the guys with loud sound systems i go to school with a bunch of them and i just tell them that they have it to listen to mine is a loud system because i need it to hear over my exhaust

oh and i do know a kid that graduated last year and tried going into the marines but they would not take him because the sound system in his truck caused him hearing loss

Well I do know when I get my 68 Done, I am going to have dual 3" pipe coming off the headers and my mufflers will be 2 Dynomax Bullet Race Mufflers part # 24219 (18").. I am just hooked on the Bullet, since I now have the Dynomouth Exhaust on my Z, just had the stock muffler and tips cut off, cut a section of the stock I-Pipe out and put the 18" Bullet on and then had a custom y-pipe made out where the stock muffler was on the Z28, and had 2 Edelbrock Chrome Flat Tips installed.. Nice Deep Throaty Rumble and Screams like a Race Car @ 3K and above... Do a search on Google.com for Dynomouth and look for the ratio411 page and you can get an idea of how a Dynomouth sounds (which mine is mellower sounding then the other Z28 that used the 12" Muffler)...

Seke69 03-11-2003 05:08 AM

If they write you a citation for excessive noise, don't argue, but ask what type of device they used to determine dB level, ask to see it, just like you should do with a speeding ticket, when you don't believe you were speeding. Get a pad of paper, and write down every word they say, make sure the officer sees you taking notes, even if they write the ticket, the notes will come in handy in court. If you're lucky though, they may doubt their call (because they think you have a reason to contest). You'll probably get a ticket, for something like a license plate light being out anyway, but you're no worse off.

I dont have that problem right now since my truck is in a million pieses

bobs409 03-11-2003 08:45 AM

You think cops would worry more about the drug situation and a bit less about someones exhaust pipes.

ckhd 03-11-2003 10:06 AM

File a civil complaint against the police department. Sue them for harassment. Call the mayor at home. There's a ton of things you can do, but DON'T fix it just because of some jerks with badges.

Hey, Dmnall. Go to Laneswheels.com This guy is doing full length headers and true dual exhausts on the late model Z cars. Your choice of 2 1/2 or 3". Talk about loud. You can go all the way to the back or dump at the axle.
