Can't find a gas cap (1972 only?)
1 Attachment(s)
I have a 1967. Someone must have changed the tank before I bought the truck. The 1967 cap will not fit.
So I'm guessing it's a 1972 tank. Might this be a 72-78 cap? I'm looking for a stylish locking cap, but I'm afraid most (which don't show the back) won't fit. So can you 1972 guys (assuming I'm correct) confirm/recommend something? thanx |
Re: Can't find a gas cap (1972 only?)
Dave I have a 71 with California emissions system, charcoal canister. The caps I bought at NAPA where junk from China. Rubber perished quickly. I determined they where generic ones used for outboard motor gas tanks.

Your gas filler neck looks the same as on my '72 C20. I used a '70, fits great. As I understand it, '72 C20s had no emission regulations yet, so it has a different filler neck than the C10s.

For my 71 gmc I just went to running and bough one for a Ford 8n. It fits othe tractors too. But it works great with my pickup.

Thanks! |
Re: Can't find a gas cap (1972 only?)
Check if the tank has plugged off emission lines at the top corner on the passenger side. That will tell you if its a 71 (has lines) and later or 70 and earlier. (nothing there)
Then go to the stant website and lookup cap numbers. |

Thanx for the info. I was hoping someone with a 72 would recognize the inside of the cap, it is different than the 67 for sure.
@demian5, here are a couple of pics of the tank. I'm pretty sure it's a vented emissions tank, but that hasn't helped me. @71gmcC15 Are you saying some ford ones fit? Would you happen to know the years/models? Not sure what an 8n is (tractor) If it's only tractor, probably would not help as I want something that looks custom. Does your cap and filler neck look the same inside as mine? I've ran the hose from the passenger side of the tank out of the cab, so I have vent. Much thanks to all! |

Here are my findings from my own adventure. Should be what you are looking for.

Your best to plug them all off and get a 70 and earlier cap. |

Truck smelled like gas in cab when I bought it. I blocked everything off and pressure became a problem. I drilled 2 holes in cap. Pressure gone, but the smell of gas was coming in the cab from the cap. I ran the passenger side of the tank hose out of the cabin below the vehicle. No smell at all now. None. I will check into the numbers you supplied, but I'm looking for somthing custom looking, so I doubt stant will be the answer. Thanx! |

The gas cap package had a list of about a million different tractors. 8n was just one I remembered. It looks like our fillet necks are the same. I do have an evap canister. So I asume its an emission tank

Re: Can't find a gas cap (1972 only?)
Our trucks came from near the end of an age that didn't believe in re-inventing the wheel for every vehicle every year. If there was a gas cap or radiator cap already being made, why not employ it?
Now, interchangeability is just about lost. |
