H-pipe, balance pipe place ment???
I just bught new headers for my truck and wile i was working on the exhaust i thought i would put in a H-pipe. My only questions is that where should i put it? Right after the headers, further down the pipes or what? Any help would be nice. Thanks Guys

I HAVE HEARD THAT IF YOU RUN YOUR TRUCK AND PUT SOME SPRAY PAINT ON YOUR EXHAUST AND WHERE IT STARTS TO BURN OFF FIRST THAT IS WHERE THE H-PIPE NEEDS TO BE PLACED. I DONT KNOW IF THAT IS CORRECT JUST WHAT I HEARD. JEREMY |

What JEREMY told you is the way it's supposed to be done, Even though sometimes there is something in the way of doing it, like the tranny,crossmember etc. The reasoning being it's the place where the most backpressure is swirling,IE: building heat.
This came to me from a friend that builds custom exhaust for race cars and streetracers. |
Thanks RON WOODGEARD. what kind of paint should i use? Will just like regular black spraypaint work? I beat it smells pritty bad for a while when the paint is getting burned off.

Jermey has it. It is not as close to the headers as possible. I think you will find it to be 12-18" from the collectors.

Any paint except HIGH HEAT.
I also agree it will be a foot to a foot and a half from the collectors. |
Jeremy Martin is right. Thats what all the test have shown to work. It doesn't have to be a lot of paint, just hit it down one side of the pipe, run it, mark it, cut and weld. Then go back with some laq thinner and take off the rest of the paint

The paint method is the way that the old guys used to determine the length of "drag pipes" on Harleys. Back then you couldnt buy aftermarket exhaust that were already "tuned" to the correct length. They would paint a light coat on .... fire up the engine....ride around till the engine and headers got hot...shut off engine....let cool.....and then trim the tubes to the length where the paint burnt off. (told to me by my grandfather - an Ol' Harley Head from way back in the Knucklehead days....:D )

Noting wrong with the paint method as it does work.
But if you want a easy way to do it go and buy yourself a Ray tek heat indacator. All you will have to do is hold down the button and find the hot spot on the pipes. Pretty easy to get it right as the ray tek has a lazer pointer that shows you exactly where the heat is comming from. Just thought I would share a clean and easy way to do it. Ray Tek's are about 70-80$ and you can get them at any NAPA autoparts:) |
There is actually an exact temperature where you want the Hpipe to be. I dont know what it is offhand, but will find out. The way it *should* be done is to fine the correct temp, then using a temp gun find out exactly where it is on the exhaust and stick it in. Im sure the paint method is fine when you arent looking for every last .1hp.

This is where I put my "H" pipe in my 71 blazer.Since it's a 4x4 and has a transfer case this was the forward-most position I could place it.
