Vortec Coolant Bypass
I'm using the following heater valve on my two hoses that run from and to the heater/engine - https://www.oldairproducts.com/produ...ve-kit-50-1555
Say's "Special design diverts coolant directly to the engine, away from heater core, when in the off position to reduce excess heat inside the vehicle" In my minds eye that would mean I shouldn't need a bypass hose on my Vortec head style engine? What do you think? :uhmk: https://img1.oldairproducts.com/prod...0d6b016716.jpg |
Re: Vortec Coolant Bypass
Not sure on the bypass, I don't run one. Over 60,000 miles with out an issue.

Ya, I'll probably be okay. |
Re: Vortec Coolant Bypass
Not sure on the vortec but I'm using one on my LS....which I've been told needs the bypass

Re: Vortec Coolant Bypass
my new gm L31 i installed was burping and girggling until i did the little bypass hose from the water pump to intake like a BBC engine has from the factory .
i read a lot and asked a lot on this and it seems 50/50 mix of problems or no problems so try it and you will know . mine would pass gas in to the overflow bottle and then when the blower fan was on you would smell coolant like a bad heater core leaking . also if the vehicle is quiet i was hearing the rad cap letting it past . |

Vortec block or no? I am told the some of the blocks have the bypass in them, in turn which does not require the bypass from back of intake manifold.
This is a roller motor no doubt. Here is a pic |
Re: Vortec Coolant Bypass
I do like what your thinking. Making it comfortable in the Summer. I know that stupid little heater core will take 10-15 degrees off the engine in summer.

Re: Vortec Coolant Bypass
I believe it's the vortec heads that don't have the bypass not the block. Could be wrong.

Re: Vortec Coolant Bypass
That is correct. Every '95-'02 block I have had, still has the bypass passage as in the pic in toolboxchev's post. It is the Vortec heads that do not have the matching hole drilled in the deck surface. This can be easily drilled when building an engine.

Re: Vortec Coolant Bypass
I will have to look and drill my two sets of vortec heads if they dont have this hole
In the slow process of pulling one now with my broken leg takes me longer to do these days |
Re: Vortec Coolant Bypass
None of the Vortec heads have that hole drilled in them. That is why the L30 and L31 use an external bypass.
|
Re: Vortec Coolant Bypass
The one thing i should ask do you need to drill out front and back of both heads ?
|
Re: Vortec Coolant Bypass
It's a lot easier to add a bypass than it is to drill heads.

Re: Vortec Coolant Bypass
The bypass is only on the passenger side at the front. If your engine is already together, no need to pull the head. Just plumb in an external bypass as sweeetK30 did.

Here's mine. The hose is Gates #12044, cut to fit.

Re: Vortec Coolant Bypass
I see what you mean easier to do the bypass then drill the heads
I did not realize you had to drill the passages in the heads at an angle |
