Re: Shucks First Build
Looking good. Whats going on with the yellow square on the lift?
|
Re: Shucks First Build
Thanks.
The yellow pickup is my teachers nephews getting a crate new motor put into it along with a turbo 350. I'm too involved in my project to go help out over there. |
Re: Shucks First Build
Here's where she'll sit for awhile. Gotta pay off some people for parts then once that's over I'll be back in it!

Re: Shucks First Build
Remember this thing? Well school started back up and I sadly got hardly anything done this summer due to a 55 hour week and squeezing freinds in after work. But here it was going back to school
http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/...27F2690D44.jpg Wood floor with 1 coat of stain I put on today http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/...A69A413DA0.jpg http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/...6EC9892B73.jpg http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/...A15B0BBF02.jpg Now being back in school, the only way to get a good grade in class is to work, meaning work gets done everyday. Slowly but surely but I figured I'd chime back in. |
Re: Shucks First Build
Glad to see you back at it. Going to school and getting grades for working on your own truck seems like a great deal.
|
Re: Shucks First Build
Plus the awesome learning experience. Can't beat it.
|
Re: Shucks First Build
Good to see you back at it! Man I need to go work on mine..
|
Re: Shucks First Build
Yeah she's coming along, very slowly.

Re: Shucks First Build
Your shop looks like a hot rod shop. At our local tech school students are not allowed to bring their own cars to shop.
|
Re: Shucks First Build
Hah, never noticed that. We aren't much for hot rods but it just so happens we have a ton in the shop right now. The vette just showed up. The pickup, ford and the Plymouth are my teachers

Re: Shucks First Build
Wires wires wires! But she'll run under her own wiring now, 55-60 lbs of oil pressure with working electric fans. It was a good week!
http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/...6765AAE7B4.jpg Kinda messy right now but it'll get cleaned up! http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/...EB3D6703DB.jpg Bent my own trans lines for the first time http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/...2BA9CC68E8.jpg Robbed these along with a bunch of other stuff out of a doner 83 suburban my teacher is junking. So far have taken seats, gauges, brake pedal assembly, steering wheel and inner fenders http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/...C8BDC56165.jpg Need some hangers, but got the exhaust how I'll want it, along with being hanged up and with turn down tips welded to the mufflers. Just a teaser I guess. http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/...EDE85F49E9.jpg |

Re: Shucks First Build
Nice work, As a high school student you have a big headstart from when most of us got started with welding and fab work. I learned in a shop on the job but it took a long time to work my way up from sanding and sandblasting to doing fab and finish type work.
|
Re: Shucks First Build
Thanks! Yes I am definitely fortunate to have a school that appreciates and encourages what I'm doing, along with a family known for their cars and experience working on them. I'm having a blast yet I can't wait to finish

Re: Shucks First Build
Some panels I made for the floor. Turned out better than I planned
From http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/...83F3CF7EFC.jpg To http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/...FADD15F034.jpg Now for the rockers... Honestly not sure what I'm gonna be doing here... |
Re: Shucks First Build
Floor pans look good!

Re: Shucks First Build
I need some help. My teachers haven't done this before and I've gotten mixed opinion on what to do here. Butt weld, overlap then weld or do I set the body metal back a little and weld it in? I've got the inner where I want it, the rocker just scares me.
http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/...25B9117721.jpg http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/...871F80004A.jpg http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/...FF76C931_2.jpg Really could use some advice here |
Re: Shucks First Build
That is one cool looking build.. Im almost 50 and youre doing as good a job or better job than I do on these things.. with about 30 years at it Keep up the good work and tell your shop teacher that hes teaching you well

Re: Shucks First Build
In areas that you can get behind to hammer and dolly to keep the pieces aligned I like to butt weld but, if it is closed and you can't get behind a small overlap will be easier. The area inside the door opening at each end of the rocker can usually be butt welded without getting behind as there is enough bend in the pieces to hold the shape. Where the rocker meets the cab corner the factory overlapped those parts and had a bead of sealer over the joint if I remember correctly. Try to weld it it as close as the way the factory did and things will fit better. Trimming parts to butt weld takes patience to get a good fit. Take your time.

Re: Shucks First Build
No more floor
http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/...3DD5521C_1.jpg Any tips how to remove angle strips? http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/...BD20D6CC_1.jpg |
Re: Shucks First Build
Great job man. Subscribed. Always wanted a stepside.
|
Re: Shucks First Build
The angle strips are spot welded to the sides. If they are not damaged with rust thru, then I would not take them off.
But, it you need to take them off for repairs, then the best way is to use a spot weld cutter on all the spot welds from the outside of the bedside (its easier to body work the few spots on the out side of the bedside then all the spots on the angle strip once you replace it). You should be able to find the spot welds with a light sanding of the paint or using a wire wheel on the area where they are attached. |
Re: Shucks First Build
Finally got them
http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/...BF10BC20D4.jpg Test fit process for everything http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/...7A6F777F_2.jpg Angle strip fit http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/...BD819CFB_2.jpg http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/...D1569F70_2.jpg And then a problem... Wood won't fit. I didn't buy the wood new, when I bought the spare bed the wood came with it. After a week of staining and making it pretty it won't fit, gotta figure out what to do here... http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/...5F5CB587_3.jpg |
Re: Shucks First Build
Do you have a wood shop in your school? You might get enough room between the planks with a hand plane taking a little off each one. A sharp plane is a fun tool to use.
