Rear control arms
I'm starting to turn my 88 c1500 into a performance street truck and the first step is building a solid rear end. I plan on using the stock 8.5" 10 bolt but I plan on converting the suspension to a coil over set up and mounting some upper and lower control arms to the differential/axel housing. Since the rear end was not originally equipped I'm having a tough time finding them designed for the truck. Any suggestions other than just custom fabbing some adjustable ones in??

Re: Rear control arms
Here are a few links to 4 link set ups.
I would think any could be done with coil overs. http://store.gaugemagazine.com/88-98...on4link-1.aspx http://www.ebay.com/itm/88-98-Chevy-...-/350572088113 http://www.ebay.com/bhp/4-link-chevy-truck Kim |
Re: Rear control arms
Thanks. using 4-link instead of control arms or trailing arms completely altered my search results.
Anyone here have a preference on axle brands for an 8.5"10 bolt to hold about 450 hp?? |

Moser.

Re: Rear control arms
Any specific axles you have used and how much horse power do you have behind them?

Re: Rear control arms
The moser axles were in a El Camino with a 400sbc 10 bolt rear end. I have no idea how much power the car made. If I had to guess I would put it conservatively at 425hp and close to 500tq.
I also had Superior Axles in a Mustang with a 8.8 rear end. Engine made 415hp/455tq. So they saw use everyday. PS I would make sure you do a very detailed build of the 10 bolt. Also get a cover with bearing supports in it. It can break the caps no prob. |
Re: Rear control arms
IMHO if you plan on putting any power to this project I would think about stepping up to 12 bolt or 9" with 31 spline axles. They should still be in abundance in the bone yards.

Re: Rear control arms
I am considering changing the whole rear end but I keep reading that the 8.5" 10 bolt rear end can handle platforms with < 500 hp no problem
