1969 c20 v-8 removal/replace question
 

Like the title says, removing the tired 350ci and replacing it with another.

Truck has a 4 speed sm465, is it easier to do the engine r&r without removing the transmission, or just bite the bullet, remove both? Trying to make it easier on myself.

It's about 6 of one and a half dozen of the other.... I like to bolt the trans and engine together out of the truck. Seems like I always have trouble getting things lined up laying on my back. But it can also be a challenge getting the engine and trans stuffed in there when they are bolted together.

I'm with LockDoc. It's easier for me to line stuff up out of the truck but I've done it both ways. It's way easier with even one helper to get everything lined up and started. regardless of which way you do it.

With the fellas above also. I try to make everything as easy as possible even though it takes longer, when I replace an engine I basically open up a can of necessary work. I pull the nose whole. Cleaning, degreasing, wire brushing, painting.
If you're just swapping a junkyard runner to get moving again, then do as you see fit, did plenty that way too

Last 4 speed I did I hung the tranny from a pipe between two jack stands in the cab with a 1/4 ton comealong. (I pulled the hump first) Worked slick. No jack in the way underneath and the tranny stayed in position the whole time, but I was able to wiggle it around during reassembly.

You have to pull the whole doghouse to fly the engine and tranny as one unit. The 465 is a heavy beast. If you only pull the engine, you can remove the hood and radiator, but making those 3/4 head bolts to the SM465/bellhousing is a cusser. I bought a special 3/4'' squeeze ratchet from Kent's Used Tools, but usually it doesn't quite work.
Depends on how much body dissassembly you want to do.
With a 4WD it's even worse.
