1966 GMC Suburban build
Digging in on a new project. A I purchase back in late January. Started in on the truck. Then I purchased another one to do a quick Patina on.
I just removed the body on Friday and went in on Sat and removed the rear (it's a GMC with leaf springs). Went in Sunday AM and removed the 305e or 351e V6 (not for sure which) along with poweglide trans I've already gotten a ton of new parts. Received my wheels I ordered 2 months ago. Engine was ordered 3 months ago. Should be here next month Some of you may remember my last C10 build back on 2011 https://www.attitudecustompainting.c...10-2010/01.jpg http://www.attitudecustompainting.co...10_resized.jpg I did a 18 month frame-off resto on a '72 Montego GT 429 / 521 after the C10 This is my '63 GMC Suburban 'Custom' I did the patina paint job on.... Before (stripped, bodyworked, new fenders, 2K prime...) https://www.attitudecustompainting.c...3-61a9ebd1.jpg After (basecoat/clearcoat w/ matte finish) https://www.attitudecustompainting.c...1-bf6bbcb8.jpg My current project the day I purchased it Current project - 1966 GMC Suburban 'Custom' https://www.attitudecustompainting.c...52_resized.jpg It's current state.... https://www.attitudecustompainting.c...50_resized.jpg https://www.attitudecustompainting.c...56_resized.jpg |

Thank you....

Re: 1966 GMC Suburban build
I like to watch builds from the start and see how others do things. Sometimes i learn alot about how i could have done things versus how i did things.
Looking good so far. |
Re: 1966 GMC Suburban build
Moving right along.
Had the frame sandblasted along with control arms. Primed, sealed and painted the frame in SEM Hot Rod Black last week (8/18). Brought it home and started putting pieces back on https://www.attitudecustompainting.c...20_resized.jpg https://www.attitudecustompainting.c...19_resized.jpg |
Re: 1966 GMC Suburban build

I bought them from JEGS. I think they were about $158 each + $11.99 each shipping. |
Re: 1966 GMC Suburban build
Looks great so far! What is your take on painting vs powder coating the frame? I am unsure which direction I want to go with mine. So I am looking for pro's or con's of both. What types of paints are typically the best?

Since I own a body shop, I found it easier (and quicker) if I did it myself. I did have my last C10 powdercoated, and the frame had some rust pitting in it. Well, powdercoating does not fill pits, so I ended up sanding down from the front cab mount forward, doing some bodywork, and repainting it anyway. Powdercoating is more durable than paint though, but I found no problems on previous frames I've 'painted' Powdercoating would most likely be quite a bit cheaper for someone such as yourself I had 2 quarts of SEM Hot rod Black along with 2K primer and black sealer on this one. So probably about $300 plus my time. |
Re: 1966 GMC Suburban build
Just got the exhaust done. Moving along. Can't wait to fit the body on.
Doing the body at my shop and the mechanical/frame/engine at home Before exhaust https://www.attitudecustompainting.c...57_resized.jpg https://www.attitudecustompainting.c...35_resized.jpg https://www.attitudecustompainting.c...17_resized.jpg |
Re: 1966 GMC Suburban build
Looks awesome. What panhard bar are you using?
|
Re: 1966 GMC Suburban build
It's a CPP. They call it the Deluxe Track Bar. I had it on my C10 as well.

cover. I may look into those. Thank you. Of course if I knew of a shop that had a large enough hydraulic press... |
Re: 1966 GMC Suburban build
You definitely wouldn't be able to run an oversized cover with the POL one then.
I also ran this cover on my C10. On the '66 GMC Suburban I had to purchase the bracket as well since it came with leaf springs |
Re: 1966 GMC Suburban build
Great looking chassis.

Re: 1966 GMC Suburban build
that chassis looks amazing - so much easier to get everything sorted before the body goes on - exhaust routing looks very smart...

Re: 1966 GMC Suburban build
Just about ready to paint the outside of the body
I did the roof last weekend along with the firewall Inside is done (Toyota titanium color. Also widened the tubs 2") The bottom is also done (Raptor lined) Only the quarters and doors this weekend. I may do the fenders and bumpers to though I might actually get the body done before the end of the year so close but yet so far  Video of first startup in October https://www.attitudecustompainting.c...nterior_18.jpg https://www.attitudecustompainting.c...urban-body.jpg https://www.attitudecustompainting.c...-gmc-suburban/ https://www.attitudecustompainting.c...n_paint_14.jpg |

That's some straight body work there.....
Looking great. That interior color looks similar to mine. This one was a custom mix that we coated with a matte clear. Marc |
Re: 1966 GMC Suburban build
colour combo looks sharp.
youngrodder - that matte clear on the dash works really well. |
