So, is this truck going to be too much of a project? I have a father and brother in law that are skilled mechanics and can do the labor to replace this engine. But who know what else is wrong. Or should I just keep looking and try to find a driving 4wd with little to no rust thats within my budget (as close to or under $8k as possible)
Total newbie as well... Welcome! This forum is great.

My advice after seeing a lot online and then in person is... it looks 1000x better online. Body panels will look straight, rust will look limited and then in person you wonder if it's the same truck! If you can't go in person, it may be worth having an independent mobile mechanic check it out and send you a detailed report.

For a budget of 8K, I'd think you could find a decent higher trim level K series truck (with power steering, disc brakes, etc). Even a roller for $4k that you need to drop an engine in would be within $8k. And always ask for the PID on the inside of the glove box door, if available. It'll tell you a ton of info on the truck.

The number of 3/4 ton 4X4 Subs produced in 68 is in fact 299.

Wow, that first link is a c20 cheyenne super custom camper that looks to be in decent shape. Originally a 402 though perhaps? Still, I like it. SPID would be good to see.

This truck is not currently running, he knows the previous owner put some bondo repair on it before powdercoating and giving it this paint job. He believes the frame bed cab etc are original becuase it has 4 drum brakes but he's only had it for 2 years. Has a SM465. But no sticker on the glove box.

This is the craigslist post https://albuquerque.craigslist.org/cto/5795705038.html

And a video he sent me of the truck https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZdXB6I5jPM

Thanks so much for all the help, any and all advice greatly appreciated - Nancy

Welcome to the board! It's hard to buy anything based on pictures, but it's done quite often. I bought a 72 4x4 out of Washington state a few years back( I am in Maryland as well) I got pictures of everything I wanted to see and I had a member look at it for me as well.

Good luck on your hunt!

I'm trying to get more details from the owner's daughter on this truck... but struggling.

http://spokane.craigslist.org/cto/5841505077.html

When I spoke to the owner they mentioned
  • Major rust around tool box and missing the tool box cover
  • it drove and stopped well
  • the only issue was it would come out of reverse if you backed over a curb or a 'bump' and fall into neutral.

Anyone have an idea on what that might be? I can live with that in the short term (don't have a curb and don't drive around in neutral). Am not looking forward to driving 10 hours round trip for a total bust...

Nice truck. Tool box is in the passenger side of truck bed and are notorious for rusting out. Clean replacements are spendy. Coming out of gear is usually wore out shift linkage.

Thanks for the warm welcome, and the encouragement from another Marylander. I think I'm going to keep looking, see if I cant find a better 4x4 within the budget. I'm really enjoying this forum.

Keep looking. Find one that is all original most importantly never been painted. That ones been for sale for a good while. I've learned here in NM that any recently painted truck in this state will be full of bondo. We might as well be considered the bondo capitol of the US.

Couple real nice short bed Cheyennes in Colorado. One with a big block the other with A/C and a 383ci.

Here's the one with the 383ci. http://denver.craigslist.org/cto/5864024158.html

Looks like it could be a bondo nightmare... especially if no paint was sprayed over the bondo and then is sat for 3 years.

Is an AC cab though and driving.

Thought I had found a 71 K20 in Dark Yellow, it isn't. Review of the SPID shows it to be a 71 Ochre Custom /20 on, apparently, a K10 chassis. Haven't seen the frame numbers but the seller intended to look for them.
Might be a nice builder for someone, considering it has an A/C cab and a wood bed.

This thing has an interesting front end on it. I kinda like it for a full custom look. Probably wouldnt look good on a stockish truck.
